' 4JSrMI ssmaasmr " THE ORKGON DAILY JOPBWAL. PORTLAND. MONDAY. BVENIMO. NOV ITTIE WILL NOT GET A SENATOR Cast Side May Combine in Se lection of Successor to Addison C. Foster. MUST COMBINE WITH EASTERN COUNTIES Charles Sweeney pi Spokane Will Make Strong Fight Campbell a Factor. LfcT; . (Special Dispatch In lb Journal ) Tarotna, Nov. 14. That Seattle will ' not get a chance to name a successor to Addison O. Foster of Pierce county In tht I'nlted States senate seems a fore- (one conclusion. It is also regarded as practlt ally certain that Seattle's asplra ' Uona will be fought by combined forces east and west of the mountains. The entrance of Charles Sweeney, the wealthy Spokane mining roan, into tite race is a factor that must be counted upon seri ously. Sweeney has announced his will ingness to contend for the prise, and 5 that means that his vast wealth will make him a most formidable aspirant. Pierce county will make a strong fight for Foster, but there is a (rowing be- lief among those who are willing to ex press an opinion that Senator Foster's chances for returning to the senate are f decidedly slim. This is not the openly ' stated situation In Tacoma, but It is the raw truth, nevertheless. Pierce must combine with the eastern counties to ac complish the overthrow of Seattle's as pirations. The Spokane delegation has already announced for Sweeney, and there are many who believe the Spokane millionaire will be the man. Klag Oonaty Sight In King county the fight between John L. Wilson and Sam H. Piles Is being fought from ambush. Openly Piles has the Indorsement of King. Covertly Wil son hss a pull that Is not weak. Of all the great papers In the stats, but one Wilson's organ openly and vigorously ' supported Mead for governor. If Mead helps any candMsxe. wiison win iiaeiy be that man. Every county east of the mountains is opposed td Piles and Wilson If Seattle can be defeated. If there should be a deflection, it will be to Wilson rather than to Piles. With Foster weak. Swee ney seems the most likely candidate of the several named. Spokane has another candidate for the . United States senate in the person of A. B, Campbell, also a man of great wealth. ' The Spokane delegation is pledged to Sweeney, vet Campbell Is undismayed and declares he will be a factor In the m. fight. The Pierce county delegation held a smoker at the Tacoma hotel at which pledges to Foster were made. There will be It members in the leg islature. Of this number, 118 will be ; Republicans. In a cstucus nomination (6 votes will be required to nominate. King ' county has 24, votes, and must get 41 from outside the county. Senator Fos ter has the IS votes of Pierce, and claims a strong Interest In the 10 votes in the i southwest counties. He also claims 23 ' votes in the northwest. Foster men de clare he will have 44 .votes to start with , in the fight at Olympla. Sweeney has 13 votes in Spokane county, and aspects -wid from the adjoining counties or Oka nogan: Ferry and Douglas expecting bout iff votes at the start; On combinations is now in order. e. TAHAMA - (Special Dispatch to The joaraal.) Tacoma, Nov. 14 W. H. McPhee has arrived In Tacoma from.
