To Our Patrons,
not i
iskecl "if we will make the pa-
per a permanent success ?" In this
issue we invc a few facts and let the
people draw their own conclusions.
We started this paper on the 12th
day of April, less than six months
ago; did not owe a cent on the press,
type, etc., and have managed ever
since to pay everv dollar as it be -
came due for paper, ink and tvpe)
and while a number of our exchang-
cs are now calling for the amounts
due them from delinquent subscrib-
ers so they can pay what they owe
on material, we are proud to say all
we have to do is to ask for what is
due us so we can make invprovements
to our oilier. Kent costs us $150 per
year, but we have partly bargained
for a home and oi course a hint to

in this county; from that time on the
list has rapidly increased until our !
circulation has reached a point un- 1
heard of before in the history of any !
paper in Oregon as the following will ,
testify :
This paper is now a trille over four
teen months old, and has a larger
circulation than any paper in this
State ever had at its age.

"We selected the above gentlemen
because they are trustworthy. M.
L. Olmsted xs a prominent attorney
in this city and county, and former
ly a newspaper man in the East.
JudsreL. 0. Sterns is a resident of
Baker City and is well and favorably
known throughout the State as an '
eminent la". and in California i

drove a pen in the Golden .State.
New Type. "We have received a . i
new supply of type and other mate
rial and shall continue to add to our
office until Ave have the neatest coun
try office in the State. As we said
in our first issue that Grant County
can support a paper and we intended
to be the one that would prove the
assertion, we are now more than ev
er determined to show the people of
Eastern Oregon that Grant Countv
stands in the front rank, and has at
this time a brighter future than any j
county in Oregon, east of tho Cas- j
pades.

long since that editors, reporters and
newspaper men were doing a great
injury to the morality of the country
by publishing accounts of murders,

that he hoped to see the time when
papers would not be allowed to do
so. Now the News has for the Inst i
