The Horse. A person must always have a foun dation to build upon to make the mat ter interesting or good, therefore we open tur horse column ly giving the external parte or points of a horse. A liorse has 45 external parts or points; divided as follow. In the FORE PART we have the ioivheau, cavity above the eyes, temples, lips, inw, nostrils, tin of the no.e, heard, chin, neck, throat, mane, lore top, chesr, shoulders, with, ers, arm, knee, shank, fetlock joint, pastern, coronet, hoof, fetlock, back sinews or main tendon, plate vein, chesnur, quarter.-?, toe, heel, elbow. THE BODY. Reins, ribs, flanks, belly, fillets. THE HIND PART. Tail, rump, buttocks, stifle, haunch es, thighs, hock, point of the hock. in. step. THE NATURAL HOME. As brother Merry, of the Inland Empire says, "This is the natural home of the horse," hence our horse men in this part of Oregon cannot toko to much pains in tin breeding of this noble a:':imal. Some people are anxious to raise good horse, but seem to think that if they get a line brood maie that about all that is necessaiy is to breed her to some horse, no matter whether the horse be a cayuse, old or young, blind or otherwise, a good colt is sure to be the result A horse breeder can make no worse mistake than this. First purchase the brst brood mare that you can get, then select the best horse in the country to breed to no matter if it does cost ten or -twenty-five dollars more the colt will sell for more than the difference. If you want a fast horse, b eed to a fast horse, for all sporting men know that a racer cannot come from a Norman or some of these heavy, slow horses, no more than a "spaniel dog" can come from a "snail ing cur." But if no pains are taken to secure a horse that will improve your stock, it will naturally degenerate and soon run out. This has been fully de monstrated on this coast, in the Indian pony. A tribe of Indians in Nevada, or California, were known not to have a certain kind of horse until the whites came to California and some of their horf-es were captured by the Indians, and not until a few months ago were these hordes seen again, when it was noticed that the once larirc and well bred American horses had so diminished in breeding that they were simply Indian ponies; next week we will give a few remarks on the breed ing of the horse. E Martin & Co., of this city, bought of Jas. Grant of Can von City, a two year old colt for SloOO. Daily Orego nian. Wrong in the name. It was from Jas. Brackett instead of Grant. The colt was sired by Champion Knox of this city. A Good Horse. A friend of mine is employed on a farm near Toronto, Ontario, where a horse belonging to the wife of the far mer is never required to work, but is allowed to live the life of a gentleman, for the following reason: Some years ago the lady above mentioned fell oil a plank bridge into a stream where the water was deep. The horse, which was feeding in a field close by, ran to the spot., and held the lady up with his teeth till help arrived, thus probably saving her life. Was this reason or instinct? Ex.
