It ha been said that it is a rest letter day for Astoria. I want to extend It and say that it i a red let ter day for the entire Pacific North west. Thirteen distinguished gentle men, who are leaders In the slat s where thev live, have c.ene among us and it is difficult to estimate the Im portance of their visit tn this section of the country. The very fact that they hive male this visit indicates the interest they have taken in the Pacific Northwest. They will go away with a fund of Information r-gar,ling th:? section and when any question aris-s in congress of interest to us they will be arbitrators between us and the oth er membors. Mr. Tontrue her,' referred in glowing term to the different members of the committee, and his remarfk met with much enthusiasm. After referring to the gi-eu prosperity of the country and the rapidly increasing trade with the Orient he predicted that on the bank of the Columbia river we are going to have a combined New York and Chica gro and said "We leave it to our friends Fulton and Sco't to settle whether it will be at Portland or Astoria, t as sure vou that you will receive Jus tice at the hands of the rivers and har bor committee who have gone to so much trouble und expense to come here to ascertain your needs. The congressmen hail their car at tached to the special and were taken to Ooble where transfer was niaile to the Northern Pacific and they were tak en to the Sound cities. On the way up from Flavel George Taylor, of Port land, pledged the community of inter ests between Portland and Atoria through the medium of a Scotch high ball, and called upon Congressman Frank Jones, of Washington, to respond to a sentiment in effect that w asntng- and Oregon destinies were inseparably linked, but Mr. Jones had declined the hiirhballa that rims around and cour teously refused to make a pe h. Th-r" was some discussion at the ; last sess on concerning the transpT.a i tion problems that are involv-d In your state controversies. Hut we had no tie tried facts nor authentic figures upm which we cull base an opinion. It has . always b-en. as I imd:rs!in, it, the 'Miliey of th- c imtr.ittee on rivers and harbors to take into consideration any I inequality th-re may ex st in rates and i afford nivigable river routes wrier- an unjust discrimination is being nude. The amount -xp-nl-i by the givernme. t appears to l. out of ail - proportion to the tonnage carrl"-d by the river boats. y-t it ha had an ap- preciable efTect In forcing railroad rate? i down to a reasonable figure. The fact that it is the government improvements that are primarily responsible is am ply proven by th-.- immediate Increase in tariff ann.iunc-d by the rai.ro id, when winter close. je water ruites. Your farmers of Western Oregon and Western Washington should have their wheat laid down at the seaboard at th sime price a i paid at other seaports. We have been told how the towage bill ha been divided so that seventy p-r cent Is charged to crossing the bar. and many other facts bearing on the situation have been presented to us which will be carefully considered in the deliberations of the committee when the next rivers and harbor bill is be ing prepared." The other members of the cinvnittee were averse to discussing the situation fearing that it woul.l be taken as an advance indication of their course of action in the committee room. In ad dition the congressmen are chary of interviews. They hive not always been correctly quoted, by the California pa pers in nartlcular. One of the San Francisco newspa;ier printed a start ling story, in which was incorporated an alleged Interview with Mr. Burton, in effect that the Mure Island navy vard and dry d.iek was to be abandoned in favor of the one at Bremerton. Wash. A member of the committee emphatically denied the authenticity of the interview yesterday and s'ated th navyyard would be maintained. "The idea of i! abandonment is absurd," he said. "Fifteen million dollar of the government's money has been expended in its construction, and !t can now ac commodate the largest battleship afloat. The onlv drawback Is a channel that will have to be dredged out at an ex pense of probably half a million dol lars, and the sum Is insignificant com pared with the value of the construc tion and equipment of the navyyard.
