GOULD t X TELLS OF ARIZONA I A letter from Goorgo A. Gould, j of Allegany, dated at Cibola, Arizo na, April 15, has been recolved by Tho Times and describes tho coun try ho Is visiting. Tho letter follows: Editor Times: I think jomo sort of description of this valloy will be of Interest to some of your roadors and I will try and glvo a short one. The Cibola valley is about L0 miles south of Hlytho anil across the rlvor. The bottom land was sur veyed by on Irrigation achciue, nnd thero woro found to bo approximate ly 18,000 acres, of as good land us tlioro Is nny where, I think. It Is a deep rich sandy loam, nnd tho water Is very close to the surface, flno aoll for nlfalfa, clover, corn, sugar cane, cotton nnd crops of that kind, but I don't think It would bo very good for citrus rrults. Tho mosa would bo the place for those, it Is a bench from 15 to GO feet abovo the bottom lamta. Tho growth on tho bottom Is mostly urrow weed, a brush that grows very thick on tho ground, but Is very onslly cleared. It can be brokon down with a drag, or roller, so It Is flat, burned, nnd this can' bo plowed with a good team, and breaking plow. Tlioro Is some cotton wood, willow, mo3iult, torneo. Tho last two producu a kind of bean, that -every thing cats, and s very fattening. Lumber In Scarce The cotton wood and willow mako good fencing nnd logs for cnblns. Lumbor Is very high, and tcarco, bore, and most of tho 1iousp3 nro nindo of cotton wood logs; and cov ered with dirt. This makes a cool houso and ns thero Is not much rnln hero, they do very woll. Tlioro I3 Iota or cheap land hero and somo to take up, but I would not advise any ono to movo down hero, till thoy have spent somo tlmo nnd know tho conditions thoroughly. Tho wholo bottom Is subject to ovorflow at least onco a year. Tlioro Is time after that, which -comes In Juno, to put In and harvest u crop as thlng3 grow bo fast. Need Control of Water Whnt Is needed hero Is somo sys tem for controlling the wators of the Colorado. Jt,jyoild havo to bo a dyke' about if. miles long, and the water taken iut at tho hoad of the vnlloy, at tho bond In tho river. It will bo done ovontunlly by tho government, but no telling when. Thero uro some Irrigation projects on foot hut no ono know3 how they will pay out. Weather Is Kino Tho wonther Is simply dollghtful. 1 havo scon no wlntor this year, BUHshlno ovory day, and mostly all day. Tho thermometer hns boon up to 9(1 degrees In tho shade, but It did not nooin very warm. It h mostly now botweon 80 and SG degrees, Just pleasant lu this coun try. The water from tho rlvor Is good but that from tho wells la good bad nnd Indlfforont. Tlioro Is wind hero every afternoon, enough to run n wind mill, and there nro a good many used. Hard (o Get To It 13 hard to get In hero with a train, or car, ns there la no ferry less than 25 miles and tho road on this sldo, from the forry, Is sandy and hilly. GKORGI-J A.
