Tho nnxt meotlng of tho Brother hood will bo tho second Wednes day In October nt tho church hall, The concert given at the Finnish Hall Monday evening by members of the faculty of the Henrlk GJcr drum Conservatory of Music, was of notable Interest In threo re spects. It wns a triumph of musical excellence; it Introduced to Mnrsh flold two artists of extraordinary attainments, and It prefaced that era in Coos Bay's musical develop ment wherein Its experienced teach ing forces unite In organization for tho purpose of providing regu lar, co-ordlnntcd courses In tho various branches of miiBlcal study. The soloists were Mr. Gerald Hunt, baritone, and Mr. Jcno Sov cly, violinist, with Mr. Henrlk GJerdrum at the piano. Mr. Hunt has tho gltt of a bnrltono voice of adequate power and splendid quality. Although ho was Buffer ing from a severe attack of bron chitis, thoro is no need to resorvo Judgment of his work, for ho moro than mado good with an expectant and critical audience. From his first ntimbor, tho state ly, classic "Whero'er You Walk" from Haendel's "Semolo," to tho moro emotional "Eri tl alto Macchl avl" from Verdi's "Masked Ball," he won nnd held tho osteem of his hearers as nn artist of broad vis ion, fine perception nnd, scholarly musicianship. His presonco Ib par ticularly pleasing, nnd IiIb selection of songs wns excellent. Mr. Sovely must bo ranked as a virtuoso. Technically, his enno of execution, his accuracy and smoothness in ombolllshmonta, nnd IiIb beautifully clear harmonics and brilliant double stopping arc con spicuous. His tone is of a firm ness, breadth and vibrant rlchnoss rarely hoard from a violin. His first number, "Pruoludlum nnd Al legro.", (Pugnnnl-Krelslcr), display ed his complota mastery of tech nique. Tho dlgnlflod Hnendol "Lar ghetto!' was dollghUul In Its clas sic purity and clearness, and such numbers as the beautiful Romnnco from tho Wienlnwsky D mjnor con corto wore rendered with wondqrtul sympathy nnd feeling, without tho flaw of weak Bontlmontallty. Ho closed with a brilliant display of "rapid-fire" work In tho Wlenla wsKy "Airs Russet)." Mr. GJordrtim's accompnnlmonts wero uniformly admlrnblo, as usual, combining thoso two rnro morlts of ontlro obedionce to the interpre tations of tho soloist, yot tho real ization that a piano accompaniment, especially in tho moro modern mu sic, la an intogral part of tho com position, and not nioroly an Incidont- tnl.
