General Superintendent F. L. Hurckhalter, of tho Southern Paci fic Hues In Oregon, left this morn ing via Gardiner and Hiigeno for Portland after spending a couple of doyB hero with Supt. W. F. Miller, familiarizing himself with tho phys ical conditions of tho local lines. Ho inspected the lino as far as Powers and tho property In Marsh field and North Rend with a vlow to tho construction of railroad yards, and will also Inspect the lino as fur as Htigcnc. Ho wanted to get a general Idea of It so that when the lines aro placed under tho operating department, thoy will bo better able to hatidlo it. The question of locating tho ynrdu on tho bay is a big ono mid nothing definite has been done so fnr. The holdings of tho Southern Pacific In Marshflold mid North Rend are hardly largo enough to construct economical yards. Thoy have suf ficient property along Coal Rank Inlet, but to utilize thoy thoy would havo to do bo by means of a "y" which would make switching diffi cult mid mako "dead end tracks." Division to Coos Hay It Is llkoly that tho now Hue from Coos Hay to Kiigouo will be mado ono division. The distanco is about 1-1 miles. The Hue between Marshfleld and Powers will bo mado a separate division. Tho cause of making It two div isions Instead of ono Is to comply with tho recent laws and rules reg ulating trainmen. Covering from 100 to 1-5 miles a day Is considered a day's work for trainmen under tho cght-hoiir rule. In addition to this, heavier en gines and equipment will be used on the Coos Hay-Fiigono Borvlco than can bo economically utilized on the old lino botwoen Coos Hay and Pow ers. Additional equipment will be put on, but tho heavy type of en gines cannot bo run on the old lino without considerable additional ex ponso for tho upkeep of the Hue which Is not of heavy construction. Anyway tho distanco from Marshfleld to Powers, round trip, is about 00 miles, a day's run for a freight crow. Will Return Soon ' Mr. Hurckhalter did not como to any definite decision about tho matter hut said that he and Super intendent Campbell would probably come In together booh mid go over the road mid then reach a decision as to divisions, terminals, yards, etc. No Date Set No date has yet been definitely set for starting tho operation of troliiB between Coos Ray mid Hu geue, the time depending on tho con struction department. The Uinpqua brldgo will probably be the last link to ho completed. It h possible thnt C. It. Hrougli- tou, In charge of the bridge construc tion, may arrange for temporary Borvlco over tho falso work of tho the Uinpqua brldgo, thereby permit ting trains to got through heforo tho permanent brldgo Is completed.
