Crop Report of Oregon and United States Is Prepared THE bureau of crop estimates, In co operation with the Weather Bureau of tho United States Department of Ag riculture, has prepared tho following re port showing comparisons between Oregon nnd tho United Statos. The comparisons will virtually hold good for Washington nud Idaho, as well as Oregon. Maggot Trap Prevents the Breeding of the House Fly MAGGOT trap which will practically t provent tho breeding of tho" housefly is described In n now bulletin of tho United Stutcs Dopnitmont of Agriculture, No. 200, "A Maggot Trnp in Practical Uso: an Experiment In Housofly Control." Tho Investigators who carried on this cx nerlment at tho Maryland Agricultural College declare that during August nu September at least 08 per cent of tho lar vae breeding In tho mnnuro were de stroyed, and although tho trap wbb not eo cfflclont when the weather heenmo coldor, oven then It greatly reduced tho num ber of files. ,,,., The principle of tho trnp 1b simple, It is easy to construct, and tho oxpenso is said to bo probably loss in tho long run than tho investment which many farm ers now make in screens for their dwell ings, and sprays and flyncts for their live stock. In itfl roughoBt outlines tho trap consists of a concroto basin with a lat ticed wooden platform erected upon It to bold tho manure. Tho basin is connected by n drain pipe with n Hinnll concroto cistern. Tho bot tom of tho bnsln Is filled with water Into which tho maggots breeding In tho ma nuro drop, aB they nro about to turn in the pupa or chrysalis stage, nnd nro drowned. At frequent Intervals tho water la run off Into tho cistern nnd is thou pumped bnck on tho mnnuro pile. In this way all the liquid mnnuro is saved. Tho successful operation of this trap rests upon several facts connected with tho habltB of tho housofly which have becu thoroughly established by obsorvu- Tho ndult fly lays Us eggs In Trcsh ma nure. There they remain until tho Inrvn stngo is nlmost over and the insects nro about to enter tho pupa or chrysalis .stage. At this tlmo a pronounced ten dency to migrate is ovident. in conse quence if tho mnnuro is placed upon n iilutform with n lnttlcowork bottom the larvao, while migrating, will fall through these openings Into tho water In tho basin WHK. nvn. Tho estimate Is based upon the reports ot IPS firms for April 1, 191G, nud April 1, 1913. Two hundred and sixteen firms reported their npplo holdings for December 1, Jan uary 1, February 1, March 1, and April 1. According to tho statement of tho office, tho progress of movement from theso storages during the season, estimated upon tho basis of total holdings, Decem ber 1, was 10.7 per cent In December, 17.1 per cent In January, 21.9 per cent In February nnd 24.1 per ccut in March. Analyzing tho movemont sepnrntely for boxes and barrels, It is fouud that up to April I, 75.9 per cont ot barreled applet and C8 per cent of boxed apples wero marketed. Tho total decrease since De cember 1 appears to have been 73. S por cont, or In other words, there remained on April 1 to bo marketed 2C.2 por cent ot tho total quantity ot apples placed In tho coolers last Fall. Stopping (li(. Waste. In tho enso of tho cxporlmonts at tho Maryland Agricultural Collcgo a care ful count showed that between July 25 nnd October 1 nbout 113,000 larvao wero killed In this way. This, howovor, docs not include tho number that wero picked up from tho basin by sparrows or poultry. Altogether it is estimated that during tho warm weather tho oftlcloncy ot tho trnp was probably 90 por cont. Later, when tho tempornturo was lower, tho trap's bucccss was not so marked. This was nccouutod for by tho fnct that when tho nlr Is much coldor than tho mnnuro heap tho larvao will not attempt to Icavo tho heap and thcreforo will not fall into tho basin. Another difficulty experienced uroso from mosquitoes using tho wntor in the bnsln and tho cistern to brcod In. This was overcomo by cleaning out tho bnbln at regulnr Intervals and by sprinkling a llttlo oil over tho surfaco of tho water In tho cistern. Troperly constructed, such n trnp offors no obstacles to tho convenient and ceo nomicul handling of munuro. It Is essen tial, howovcr, that each day's addition to tho heap should bo sprinkled with suffi cient water to keep tho mnnuro moist, but not enough to causo leaching. Tho details ot tho construction ot the trap aro contained in tho bulletin already mentioned. This particular trap was de signed to hold tho munuro produced by thico horses for three months, but thoro Is no reason why largor quantities should not bo treated In the samo wny, by build ing larger traps or by building sovornl ot smaller slzo.
