In pagan lands there used to bo solemn fasts and auguries of blood, by which tljoy. sought to rend tho future. Tho Catholic Church hqlds high mass just nt ho hour of midnight, and the Grcok church has similar observ ances. In pioneer dnys, when our own country was young nt hcait rind" full of faith, thcro was tho sacred and novor-to-bo-forgotton watch night, tho last night of tho old year. Then It was that tho people- mot for prar and prnlso, rind at llo solemn hour of mid night, just when tho old year van ished and tho Now Yenr camo boforo thorn, thon did they shako hnnds In loving friendship, beg forglvonoss for unkind feelings or deeds of tho past nnd promlso nmends for tho futuro, consecrating 'nil by mutual resolutions, by good thoughts and hopo nnd fnlth. This old tlmo watch fcstlvnl was most solemn, bcnutlful nnd, lrnprcsnlvo and la still observed Ii many places. Tho Coos Hay mnn who Is nl I ways roasting his noighbors j probably wouldn't do It if ho J had to pay for tho fuel. ' Zo3 Every lazy man getB n lot of satis faction out of quoting tho fact that Homo wasn't built In a day. .A Some Coos Day people always pralso a dead mnn because thoy know a knock couldn't hurt hint. Till: OLD YEAR. 0 LD yenr, you aro through, And you slip from us now, Whllo wo look to tho now That Is making Its bow With tho hopo It will bring Us tho Joys that wo cravo And the wolcomo bolls ring Whllo you go 10 your grnvo. Ah, whnt Is this llfo Dut a year when all's said, Joy, nugulsh and strlfo And the tears that wo shed? Old year, In your dnys Wo have laughed with delight And hnvo dancod In tho hnzo Of your glorious light. XAltlOUS NEW YEAR'S CUSTOMS I Mnll' H0n&8 wo ,invo 8,ln&- aimi our uirgcs wo vo pinycu, And our henrts hnvo boon wrung When our loved ones wo'vo laid Cold nnd still in tho ground. For, ns tho com ing yenr knocks nt our doors, laden with gifts, so wo should visit ench other nnd oxchnngo kind words nnd wishes. ' In Scotland this Is called "first footing" nnd thcro Is a fancy that good or ovll comes Into tho liouso with tho "first footor." In many parts of tho world tho first uuy ui onnunry .s n invoriio ono ror Thoro woro both loss nnd gain then, but In Slam and other Asiatic countrlos It Is tho dny of funerals. Tho8o Who dlo In tho courso of tho previous yenr nro, of courso, burled In duo season, but tho funornl pomp Is postponed for Now Year's day nnd then celebrated with propor om-pliasls. WITH THE TEA AND THE TOAST Old year, In your days Thoro was happiness too. On our varying ways IJlossomod roses and ruo. Thero wcro plcnsurcs nnd pnln, Thoro woro struggles and strlfo, In tho round of your llfo, Dut In summing It up As you slip from our hall You poured In our cup More of Bwcot than of gall. Oh, mny It ho chanted Of mo whon I'm through Uo lived and ho plnntcd More roses than ruo! Figures Gathered on Butter and Cheese Here Broad bent King of Business Tho dairy output of Coos county tho past year will probably show a material Incrcnso over nil preceding years. Tho Marshflold Chamber of Commorco is gathering somo accur ate data on tho butter nnd cheese sold during tho yenr from tho fifteen creameries and cheeso factorlos in tho county. A circular letter has been sent out to thorn and so far only n smnll number of them hnvo respond ed with tho desired figures. It has boon estimated that tho dairy prod ucts bring In nbout $750,000 a year to Coos county. During tho past yenr or so, tho homo consumption of hut- tor nnd cheeso nnd milk has been much grenter than previously. So far, reports havo been received from tho following creameries nnd cheeso fnctoiles: C. E. Droadbcnt's Jlyrtlo Point plant produced 310,005 pounds of cheeso and 1G.3S1 pounds of butter. C, E. Urondbcnt's Sunrlso cheeso factory produced 210,251 pounds of cheese and no butter. C. E. Urondbcnt's Arngo cheeso factory produced 1C2.5SI pounds of cheeso and no butter. Tho Mt. Anderson crenmory at Urldgo produced 11,117 pounds of butter nnd no choose. Tho avorngo prlco paid for butter fat by thorn was nbout 27 cents. Tho North Bond Condcnsnry pro duced 30,000 cases of condoiiBcd milk against about 21,000 tho previous year. C. E. llroadbont Is a sort of butter and chcoscklng of Coos county. In addition to the largo amount produc ed in his own plants, ho buys tho output of other plants. Most of tho Curry county dairy product has boon Bhlppcd via Coos Dny and IJandon and whon this nnd tho output of tho Gardiner, Hoods port nnd Scoltshurg plants nnd the Loon Lnko crenmorlos nnd choose factories aro nddod to tho amount shipped by Coos county plants, south western Oregon makes a big showing In this Industry. Tho Curry county dairy product this year was consid erably lnrgor than ovor boforo. ( QUT OUT RED TAPE ' , li " ! r- " lj T .,.,. , ... '.T . --- in. U ! , , FMBM' BLMi jr H MM WBt JW J9T T .
