Cbauncoy Clarke, a graduate of the Marshfleld high school, has kopt a list of the best records mado In the Coos county high school field meets for the1 past four yoars and It will be of ftiuch Intorest now ow ing to tho 1914 meet being ached- uiea to be neia at Myrtle point soon, A sutrimary of It follows: Winners of Fina Honor: 1909 Marsafteld, 1910 Dandon,. 1911 Banflon. 1912 Marshfleld. 1913 Marshfleld. 1914 Dandon, North Bend, Co- qulllo Myrtle Point or Marshfleld? Hammer throw, 108 feet G Inches, Strang, Bandon. Mile relay 4-man team, 4:01, Bandon. Five years ago the first Inter scholastic track meet ever held In Coos county was won by Marshflold on the local track. Since then this event has Uecame a fixed feature on the hlgh school calendar and It is doubtful If any other athletic contest equals It a popularity pr size. DurlHg this period Marsh flold has carried off first honors on tli no occasions, Bandon on two. For tho year 19M the question might bo asked, "Who are tho champions?" It la a llttlo early In tho season 'will bo tho ultlmato outcomo of this yoars competition. The above rec ords, howover, will provo Interesting to tho devotees of tho cluder path who hnvo watchvd tho development of athletics In our own llttlo corner of tho globe. It Is true that thesu records aro far from bolng world beaters In tho line of athletlo ac complishment. But to "Cooiltes" ttinv tnniln mnra 4 linn .lm nnA i. urea would Indicate. They are a beginning and a fairly good ono at that. Many of tho marks which stand as Coos county's best were mado under unfavoralo conditions, such as hoavy head winds and cold weather. Lack of coaching has al so been ono of tha disadvantages which some of tho schools have had to contend with at different times. With tho growth of county, lty and schools, training facilities are rapidly Improving so that the Coos athletes of today aro a bettor train ed lot than thoso who represented ub flvo years ago. Naturally with the bettering of . conditions and tho add oil vnnt-la.nr.n of high school competitors, now marks aro being set every year and 1914 will probably see many old recordB very badly shattered. It Is not probable, howover, that Clarko'a mark in tho high Jump, 'which by tho way, stood as a state record for a short time, will be beaten unless ho himself undertakes tho task, Hodson's broad Jump and cen tury rocorda are good enough to win points in almost any meet, and it Is doubtful If thoy can bo bettered this year. Gardiner's tlmo In tho 220, Bow man's 440 record and Larson's time In the half mile run will also prove hard to lower, whllq the shot put record Is another mark which may still stand as high, In the other events new recordB will probably be set this year, The discus and tho Javelin will appear for the first time on the athletic program while the stand ing broad Jump, which was cut out of last spring's competition, will al so be Included. These three events' ' will probably prove Important fac tors In wlnninc the moot as in than, will rest much of the unknown Hiraiigui or tuo amerent teams.
