MILLIONS IN RAISING FOXES Residents of Prince Edward Island Getting Rich in Fur Farming. The news printed In Tho Times yesterday of the project of Win. Carlson to establish a fiir ranch on South Inlet adds Interest to the following article from tho Char lottctown (Canada) Guardian con cerning tho fur farming Industry on Prince Hdward Island which Is tank ing the residents rich. The article was sent to Tho Times by W. J. Howard, a former resident of that section. A number of other Coos llayltes have come from Prince Kd ward Island, among them being Neal Hanks, of Kruso & Hanks, K. A. Anderson and others. The ar ticle Is follows: Mr. Robert Cotton, of the Char- lottetown, P. 12. I. Examiner, and president of tho recently formed Varltlme Province division of the Canadian Press Association, who was In the city yesterday, was asked about tho black fox boom on the island, and made the following statement: The highest price ever paid In the world for a silver black fox pelt at n fur sale, was botween $LT00 and $:i000, said Mr. Cotton. That fox was bred In captivity in Prince Ed ward Island. And one small ship ment of black fox pelts went to the London sales from one small Islam! ranch netted its owner over $40,000. That was before the boom. Hoforc breeding stock was bought and sold livforo the world had learned thai two or threo enterprising Prince Edward Islanders had successfully domesticated the exceptionally ran and highly prized sliver black fox. I haven't got, he snld, tho statis tics exactly at my linger ends. Hnl the present stock of breeders nger" foxes nre valued at something ovei six millions of dollars and the Pro vincial Government has already col lected taxes on last scr.son'i pups, valued for taxation purposcf nt between two and three militant of dollars. Most of the black foxes nro now held by Joint stock companies, prov ed breeders being capitalized at from twenty to thirty thousand dol lars n pair, and most of the pups at from ten to fifteen thousand dollars a pair, though somo rnngo higher. Of tho companies which have been In operation for over a year, all. 'with the exception of sovoral smolior ones which owned only one or two pairs thnt this year had no offspring, have paid dividends this autumn ranging from twenty per cont up ward. One company which bought Its breeders several years ago, and boforo prices hnd reached their pres ent level, this autumn distributee" to Its shareholders live hundred per cent In cash and In addition liando-' them a live hundred per cent stock bonus. Ono young lady of whom I know, put $1000 Into foxes a couple of years ago, and this amount re ceived $10,000 as representing her profits to dato. Several of our fox ranchers who ten yeni-B ago, if not ns poor as church nileo, at least wore no hotter off thon hundreds of their associate farmers; who had no access to capi tal; who made no lucky strokes In stocks, who have not employed more than one or two men aH keepers, today are worth at least a million of dollars, nud thero seems to be over) promlso that a number or other will havo nmnssed as much when ono of two moro hnrvosts have been Mtthcrod, Ami is this going to last? Well, thero does not appear to br a doubt that fur farming as an In dustry has coiuo to stay. Ii is hard ly to bo expected that present value will always bo maintained. The de mand for high class breeding stock Is now very great and Prince Ed ward Island moro or less corners (lie market.
