KLElNKUGEL, Germany, Oct. 4 Operations of a co-operative dairy society have been studied hero by a sub- committee of tho American Com mission on agricultural co-operation. Members of tho society own In all nbout 2i"0 cows. Each member Is required to own at least two cows to take out one share of stock costing $300. However, many of the mem bers own more than tho required 2 cows, and purchase one shnre of stock for each two cows, One of tho members who received the commiss ioners owned 30 cows and ?3G worth of stock, Milk of tho members is brought each day to the dairy by the members themselves. The dairy is operated to make a small profit, but this margin Is simply to guard against losses and not a moans to pay dividends to the members. At tho present time tho society has not paid ofi tho mortgagee on Its buildings nnd so the profits, after a portion has been plnccd In tho reserve fund, nro paid as Interest and principal on the loans, Members of tho dairy rccolvo cash for tholr milk from tho dairy. It Is bought according to tho percent age of butter fat which It contains. Tho huttormllk and skimmed milk Is returned to tho farmers for cheese and food for hogs. In another vill age the commissioners saw a co-op-erativo dairy whero tho hogs wero kept by the society, and cheeso was manufactured. Because of the sup erior quality of butter nt the co-opor-ntlvo dairy, as compared to butter mnde on tho farms, tho prlco obtain ed for co-oporntlvo averages nbout 1fi per cent uhove the market price. Tho co3t of making is considerably reduced bo that tho returns to tho monibers aro satisfactory Denlors In butter arc required to pay a locat tax, but because of the co-operative anil non-piollt seoklng character of this dairy no tax Is required unless tho dairy wishes to purchase milk from tho outside farmers. All mem bers of the dairy uro required to supply nil of their milk not needed for use at homo to the co-operative dairy. The manager of tho dairy who appeared before tho commissioners said that his salary was $4G0 a year, with a free house, frco butter nnd milk allowed. Yet ho was a trained dnirymen and a gradunta of one of tho German dnlry schools. Ho told tho commission everything of these schools iu which tho Germans place great store. In every Gorman town there Is one school In which dairying Is taught. When the children nro fourteen years old, If thoy hnvo dec ided to becomo dnlry fnrmerH they enter this school. Tho children nro set nt tholr work oven nt an earlier ago for they must receive n prelim inary training nt the dairy boforo they enter tho school. Thoro was ono pupil at tho co-opa-ntlvo dairy preparing himself to enter tho school. It Is not, of course, child labor, but simply vocational education carried on In connection with other school training. Tho elllclency of German agriculturists and nrtlsiMis is bolloved to rest largely upon this training though from tho American stand point objection might bo mndo to It on the ground thnt to train u child to manual labor Is apt to create classes within n country. Tho linportnnco of tlio co-opora-tlvo credit societies In tho develop ment of othor co-oporntlvo enter prises wns mndo readily apparont to tho commissioners. Tho co-operatlvo dairy owns Its own land but the building wns erected on credit ad vanced by tho local italffelson socie ty. Threo and a half per cent In terest Is paid by tho society upon nil loons. Tho principal of tho loans la pnid hack by amortization Iu small annual Installments. On tho dairy houso this Installment payment each year Is two por cent of tho amount or the loan. On tho machinery it is ton por cent, and on wagons 20 per cent. Higher payment on wngona and mnchlnory nro roqtilrod bocauso of depreciation In their valuo. - .METHODIST CHURCH I North Bond.
