North Bend. Or 1HE GARDENER'S HIGH REWARD A great scholar recently naked a rich banner, "If you wero wreeK cd on an uninhabited Inland with your Ulblc, your Shnlccspearo, and one other book to bear you company what would yoti like that other book to be?" whereupon the banner who wnB n devoted gardener, answered promptly, "A good cntnluguo of seeds In very truth such a catalogue in such a spot would be a sympathetic book to have, a volume telling nothing of men's lives from which a shipwrecked traveler is sharply severed, but cloiiucnt with suggest Ioti3 of the vegetable life with which his island may bo teeming And for the unadventurous, unwrccked gard ener, whose patch of ground holds J.oldon possibilities, a catalogue of treds Is more seductive than a poem, more engrossing than a novel, more r warding than a compendium of philosophy. Every ninn or woman who owns n garden becomes infnt uatcd with n sense of possession However limited Its nrea, that bit of land Is, ns wo are often reminded, four thousand miles deep. As much ns we can reach of these four thou sand miles belongs to us a proud and a pleasant reflection when we lightly scratch tho surface of our property. Tho June garden Is a thing ot hopes and fenrs. The July garden Is n sccno of combat and accom plishment. The August garden Is the ripe reward of husbandry. "In A'igust", said the wisest and wit tiest of gardeners, Mr. Charles Dud ley Warner, "Nnturo has conic to n berono equilibrium. Having flow ered and fruited she Is enjoying her self. She sounds a truce with man. I come out with a hoe but this sweet ness disarms me. My gnrden Is nt as much peace as If It were an empire." In August the giddy throng flies to "resorts." It eats canned vegetables, stewed fruit of a watery consistency and far traveled eggs. But the wise gardener bides nt home, for the time of fulfilment is at hand and his gar den h'thorto so coy and eaprlcIoiiB- IK'W lavishes Its wealth upon him. Tho hostile Insects have well nigh vanished, the hostile birds are plumed for their youthful vigor. And neither the Cods of Olympus nor the gluttons of old Homo fared as fares the husbandmnu who daily gathers Ms own corn and limn beans, whose eggplants glisten In tho sun, and vhostj small round melons decorated with line tracery, U'.co a railway map drop from their stems Into his out stretched hand. "Coos County will not waste any more of the taxpayers' money build Ing plank roads," was the emphatic way In which Dr. 10. E. Straw, mayor of .Marshfleld, answered a News rep rcsentatlve when nsketl about the advisability of plank roads for Doug las county. The doctor mayor did not mince words when ho talked about' the planking proposition. "We have had plank roads In Coos Conn ty for many years, but there will be no more. Wo have taken n little time to do some figuring and find that they cost more In the long run than good roads. The Hie of a plank road Is not over three years You will hear some fellows tell you that a plank rond will be good for eight-, ten or twelve years, but they don't know whnt they aro talking nbout. After two or three years' time the nails begin to pull up and then the boards. When you pu In n now board you take one of the same size ns was originally put In. rn the meantime the roadbed has been worn and the new board Is a little higher than the old ones. Re peat this operation for six months and you have a real old-fashioned corduroy roadbed. The automobile tears up a plank road faster than any other vehicle. The reason for this Is self-evident. The auto tires suck and stiove nueau tue piauK rhls constant suction loosens the nails and finally the boards are all loose. I have actually seen entire planks raised out of their place In the road by the suction of an auto going nt the rate of i miles an hour."
