Sop et' of Vienna which - bieuiesi interest to tho Amerlcnus wiih the method of farm bookkeeping. Tho greater part of the administrative work of tho socie ty Is carried on by the (leneral Secre tariat. Undoubtedly tho Austrian fanners have determined Just where they stand. In every community a ropre Hontntlvo number of farniH aro chosen and the owners of these farms are In structed In a simple system of ae- ounts which are turned In every week to tho central society In Vien na. When a farm Is listed In the bookkeeping department for the re turn of theno accounts, an Inventory (s taken by an export of tho "plant" iporatod by tho farmer. Thus It Is known at tho start Just what tho farmers Investment has boon and his returns aro figured upon this basis. Weokly reports nro sent to tho society showing tho progress of tho various crops together with statements of cost of niatorlal. labor, etc. ".every thing Is subdivided according to crop yr according to tho Btoek raised. In 'his way tho central society can de erinlno accurately Just where the farmer is making or losing and be cause of comparisons with tho re turns of other farms tho society can advise him of any changes In meth ods likely to lucronso his Income. Tho work of tho society Is divided In to tho big divisions of ngrlculturo of tho country. Thus tboro Is tho do partinoiit of dairying, of grain grow ing, of forestry, of fruit and vino cul ture, Tho returns of tho farmers nro first entered in tho books of tho cen tral office and thon aro divided ac cording to crop and aro turned over to tho Interested division. Thus each division of tho society operates with oxact Information as to the status of Its particular branch of ngrlculturo at tho moment. Tho valuo of such statistical data Is obvious. Hut of courso the Individual farmer could not be Induced to go to tho trouble of making out weekly reports unless thoro appeared somo material benefit to hlmsolf. This tho society does by making a critical annlysls of each farmers' returns and furnishing him at tho end of each year with a com prehensive roport upon his year's work. If faults nro noted In his ad ministration of his fnrm, If ho Is not marketing properly, or If It would bo more profitable for lilm to change his crops or to engage In dairy forming Instead of grain growing, ho is nuvls ed by tho best experts of tho country. If, during tho yoor, Ills rotuniB show bad leakage, an expert Is sent to consult with him in order to check tho losses. Slnco tho Information which tho farmer sonds tho society lr, confidential he Is protected by be ing given a number and his reports nro never signed but only numbered. Tho system hero described has not been in operation long enough to have been generally ndopted by tho farmors of Austria, but sufficient re turns nro being made to enablo tho society to annlyzo tho farming condi tions of each section of tho country and of each Important crop. It is upon this Information that tho re commendations of the society upon tariff matters are made, and so the farmers nro assured of scientific tar iff protection. The advantages to tho Individual farmer nro proving so ob vious that tho system is rapidly spreading. Tho system, of account ing Is uniform over tho entire coun try, and tho Americans realized that it would bo necessary to secure uni formity of accounting If the practlco U to bo adopted In the United States. I!ut oven If tho work of accounting Is not taken up nationally, but only by tho Individual farmers and they are Instructed how scientifically to check up the expenditures and re ceipts great good would result to tho individual American farmer. "Writing good KngllHh Is only a habit, and iinist be treated In High School teaching," said Prof. Harold (J. One teacher cannot Inculcate a habit lu a school full of pupils lu three hours a week. "If thoro Is any remedy for tho de plorable Inability of our high schools o teach their pupils to write good Kngllsli, It must bo applied by all of tho tenchors, who must ct together and not leave tho whole responsibil ity with tho one who tenches com position mid rhetoric. Common sonso and not a literary standard Is what wo want In high school English teaching. Tho students must learn to express thoniaelves elenrly and effectively nbout tho matters with which they hnvo to denl In their other studies and In their dally life. Rhetoric Is not a thing apart. "Only recently wo received eleven applications for n temporary place on tho faculty of a collego with which I was associated. "Tho schools will not turn out students ablo to wrlto good Kngllsh until correct usngo Is regarded as a habit, and Inflexibly required by nfl teachers In connection with all writ ten work.
