STERLING CASTLE Copyright, 19111, by Tho Associated Newspaper School, Inc. ONE Sunday morning In 1543 a pretty, helpless little girl baby less than a year old was seated on a throne In tho spacious chapel of Stirling Castlo In Scotland, sur rounded by fierce, mailed men. A cardinal hold n crown over her head; tho tiny fingers wore clasped for a moment about a scepter; a huge, uuwluidy sword was buckled round tho llttiu wnlst, and a noble spoke tho words that created Mary Stuart Queen of Scotland. Forty four years later tho stroke of a sword In tho headsman's hands ended the llfo of this Queen one of the most beautiful and tragic figures in nil history. Resides tho coronation of Mary Queen of Scots, Stirling Castle has seon many historic ovonts. This old stronghold Is situated on tho Firth of Forth, some thlrty-llvo miles above Edinburgh. It stands on a hill high above the town of Stirling. No ono knows exactly how long ago It was built; but it Is very old. On tho esplanade before Stirling Castle stands a statue of this great man. The tragic story of tho execution of Mnry Stuart, who was crowned at Stirling, is ono of tho most pa thetic episodes In hUtory. Con demned on an unjust charge, she was sentenced to death by Elizabeth. The final scene In the life of tho beauti ful Queen of Scotland took plnco In Fortherlngay Castle In England. As Mnry approached the block, the mel ancholy sweetness of her benuty touched every heart. Even her exe cutioners knelt and begged her to forgive them for the sad duty Hint they were forced to perforin. "I forgive you with all my heart," sadly replied Mary. She knelt down and laid her head upon the block amid a tense silence broken only by an occasional sob. A moment later the chief executioner held up her head, exclaiming, "So perish all the enemies of Queen Eliz abeth!" Every day a different human in terest story will nppear In The 'limes.
