Otto Schlegelmllch. the other mem ber f the patty, remained at Gar diner to accompany their household effects here on the Gleaner. Tho trip was made In a tint bottom scow I't! feet long nnd eight feet wide. It hod no cabin but was rigged so that a tent could bo pitched on It at night for sleeping quarters. It had no power, depending on the current iiml some litish-tiolos. The actual running time wns four dnys and a half, hut they stopped at several places on account of tho wea ther so that they wore a little over a week on route. The families wore anxious to come to Coos Hay and figured that they could make the river trip much more cheaply than around by Portland. It was Impossible to attempt to drive across country with the present con dition of tho roads. Mr. Schlegel mllch said that Geo. Brown nnd other Itoseburg people tried to stop tliunt hut he know the trip could be made safely. They lint! trouble only once when they got the wrong way of the channel above Coles Valley, but they got off all right. Tho Sawyer Hnp Ids nenr Scottsburg and tho Smith Ilnplds near KIkton were the only other had places hut they navigated both without trouble. Mr. Schlogelmllch wanted to bring his scow to tho bay but the Gleanor would not tow It on account oftlie had weather. He may bring It la tor.
