Frledrleli Fran? Frledniann, report ed a new remedy hoforc tho llerllu Medical Society, with which he clalmod to have had surprising!' favorable experience as a result of treatment of more than a thousand patients. In spite of tho repeated demands of speakors who took part In the illscusslon, Frledniann gave no definite Information In regnrd to his preparation. Ho Injects it mainly subciitnncoiiBly and intra muscularly, but also Intravenously aniJ by tho method whch ho calls simultaneous, both Intravenously and subcutancously. According to his statement, scrofulous tumors or tho glands, tuborcolous abscesses, chronic scrofulous eczemas, bone and joint fistulas and especially pulmonary phthisis have been cur ed. Suppuration Is said not to ap pear In connection with this treat ment, as It docs after treatment with the Koch tuhorculln. The Krledmnui) preparation has also been used as a prophylactic vaccin ation In children with hereditary tnlnt. Tho vaccination consists of a single Intramuscular Injection; it Is said that no injurious action was observed. In tliu discussion which followed this report, tho statements of Fried maun were endorsed by uovcral ob servers whoso patients In clinics had been treated by Frledniann, Among them were the podiatrist Mullor, the surgeon Schlclch, tho podiatrist Karfuukel and others. The laryn gologlst illaschko reported with some reservo as to the results, Tho urologlBt Schwenk reported a fail ure in tho treatment of a patient with tuberculosis of tho bladder aud kidney and denied the appar ently good results which wcro re ported by Frledniann In this partic ular caso. lllor, director of tho surgical clinic, gained the Impres sion that thore Is a certain curative action presont in this lemedy, but he has not as yet seen u conclusive caBo. The patients treated at his clinic had cases mostly of tho fib rous type, nnd had largely bcon treated already by operation. He has not as yot soon n cure In n real severe fungous Joint caso. Goldschuelder holds that there lb little evidence ub far aa the treat ment and euro of pulmonary tuber "iilosta Is concerned. He fills to find reports about tho status before nnd after tho treatment. On the whole. It Is true that tho roportn of Frlodmnnn havo excited much Interest, but Ihls has near v com pletely been lost by the profes sion as well as by the public. It lakes a different aspect hero from that which It assumes In America, where, according to newspaper no tices which were sent to mo (pro bably Intentionally by Interested persons), sonsutlonal rcportB nbout tho curative action of tho Frled niann trentmoiit are continually Do ing publlBhcd, As n basis for the apathy with which further reports of Frledniann are awaited, tho fol lowing points may be montloned: At first, tho lack of a definite statement ns to tho composition ol the remedy, to which is added lately also the report that Fried maim will have tho romody pat ented; then, the complete failures which havo been observed since the well-known publication of Robort Koch on tuhorculln, In connection with all apparent cures for tuber culosis; further, the crttclsm to which the remedy was subjected during the dlBcusslou by investi gators of good repute, and Inst, but nut least, the lack of confidence which has been accorded Fried maun In the scientific world since his provlous publications. In 1004 aud 1005 ho began to experiment with cultures of tho turtlo tubercle bacilli strain and reported very fa vorablu results which ho obtained with this treatment on cattlo. La ter on, however, ho wub onorgotlc ally repudiated by Ruppol, on the ground of this very preparation which Frlodmauii hud given ns the evidence of the success of his treat ment. Also Robort Koch felt great dis trust of the reports of Frledniann, as he himself told me. Everything considered, It Is not- surprising that at present, after my Inquiries, the remedy Is not yet used In a single llerllu hospltnl. Only Frledniann himself continues his experiments with the romedy on patients in hlu own clinic. 1 understand that he contemplates publishing a rather ex tensive monograph in which nil the material together with an accur ate protocol will bo published. More will be learned from the pntleiitB who will bo treated and controlled from tho bculnnltiK by othor observers, howovor, than from this treatise. Only then shall we bo hi tho position to give an opin ion with somu certainty ns to tho value or worthlessuess of the treat ment. At any rnte for tho presont there Is no reason whatever for an) enthusiasm, nnd it would be de sirable, In tho Interest of patients In America If our American col leagues would do what they can to dampen somewhat the enthusiasm roused by sensational reports.
