' 3101113 TltOCIIlii: IX MKXICO. POOH, unhappy Mexico! Yes tenlny's Associated l'ress dis patches to Tho Times, printed in an extra bulletin, telling of the hilling of Hx-Prfsldent Madero and ' Ills Vlco President Sunruz, will 1111 douhtedly precipitate a now revolt of n most serious nature. Francisco Matlero deserved n hot ter fate j he eamo hefore the .Mexi can people as u liberator, and his meteoric puhllc career attests that ho sought to give to tho Mexican pop ulace a greater measure of freedom than It was prepared to receive. Jlcdero arrived In Mexico two gen erations before his time; hut he planted tho seed of human rights In ivnsto plnces oven the desrrt of military absolutism may yet yield u harvest of eiual opportunities. The iiunio of Madero will not fade quickly from tho hearts of the middle classes in Mexico. Ills tragic death yesterday will innlco him a martyr and his blood will gush from the earth and rain from tho clouds to strangle tho evil minded conspirators who are respon sible. Civilization Is too far advanced to pormlt such an atrocity to go unpun ished. The Mexican people might have consented to tho banishment of Madero until a now president could have been chosen hy populor vote, hut his murder will he resented by n moro serious and widespread revolt than over. Ilucrta and Diaz will never ho nc coptcd hy tho people of Mexico after yesterday's tragic events. The situa tion there will continue to he alive so far as It afTcels tho United Slates and the Interests of tho American residents there. Intervention has been wisely stayed, hut the day (teems hastening when the I'nlted States will he forced to fine a crisis lint will call for action. NOTICI! TO TIIK Pl'HLIC. When the llrooklngs Stato Hank opens Its doors It will he the third hank In Curry County, and when tho census of 1010 was tnken there was not n single one doing business In tho County. Win .1. Ward, superintendent of the Hrooklugii Company Is a graduate of Coinoll University class of I00J1. Ho came to Curry County In the fall of llioii. roperesentlng the llrook lngs Company, looking for timber lauds. After three weeks' Investi gation, he decided to buy hinds for his firm In this county. They now have about :1",000 acres of best timber lands In southern Curry, and are building one of the best mills on the coast. It will have a capacity of 250,000 feet dally, with electric cranes and all modern devices for handling lumber mid logs. A mill pond of oer Ilfty acres Is now being made, whero tho logging road will dump the logs. Work on the logging road Is progressing rapidly, and llvo miles of It will he hultft before sum mer. Mr. Ward has over too men now at work on the various projects at Hrooklngs mid will probably havo three or four hundred at work hy early summer. They are building n large wharf at Chetco Cove, which will have at Its outer end a depth of thirty feet of water. At this wharf. boats that will ply through the Pan-, S 1 I I ... p.. 11 .........II.. 1 ii mil v. ii mi I run loan in i iiiiiiin;. A breakwater will later bo built, en closing iiulto an area of deep water, mid the wharf can then bo extended Into forty feet of water. Mr. and Mrs. .John llrooklngs moved from Soul horn California last summer mid will make tholr per manent residence In the new town of llrooklngs. They like the cli mate of Curry County, both summor and winter much better than they anticipated. Mr, llrooklngs has quite an orchard on the Chetco River, and will take much Intrest In fruit rais ing. He takes great pride In the new town of llrooklngs. It Is laid out on ii magnificent plan, mid on n gen tle slope on the coast. Tho sewers, wat' r mains, street grading an 1 elec tric light plant will all ho put In next summer. There will he no laud speculation In the town of llrooklngs. Th lots will ho sold to the homo builders at reasonable prices, and ev ery modern convenience will be at hand. In less than two years the town of Brookings will bo tho load ing place in Curry County, and In fnct will soon he one of the prlncl- pal cities on this part of tho coast, i It Is thought by tlioso wno Know mu harbors along this part of tho Pacific that the big redwood forests of north ern California must be manufactured and shipped from this harbor at Hrooklngs. What makes this sus picion stronger Is tho fact Unit tho Del Norte Lumber Company, which owns over G0.000 acres of tho finest redwoods in California nml also owns 100 acres of land on water front near llrooklngs, has recently taken their holdings near llrooklngs off tho market. Should tho Del Norto Com pany also put In a plant at llrooklngs for mnnutnrturn of their redwood, It would be the only port In tho world where a boat could load with a carKo of redwood and fir right from the mills, and in a very few years Marshlleld and Kureka would have to keep busy to keep ahead of the growing city of llrooklngs. Walter D. Ilnioklngs. son of John I-:, llrooklngs, will continue to re side In southern California, and have charge of tho lumber ynrds at S:in Pedro. San Diego, nnd other California points. Robert S. llrook lngs of St. Louis. Mo., vice president of the St. Louis Union Trust Compa ny and president of tho Washington University, to which ho has already given several million dollars, Is vice president of the Hrooklngs Lumber and Hox Company. He made a trip through Curry County In the Bum mer of 1010 and was much pleased with the scenic beauty of this sec tion.
