Pool Halls Must Be Closed on Sabbath There. PORTLAND. Ore.. Jan. 22.- -Pool and billiard rooms throughout the county must observe Sunday closing hours. This Is tho odlct Issued by Shorlif Tom Word after consultation with District Attorney IJvans. Sher iff Word says; "Sunday gambling among the boy who congregate In the pool rooms is the cause o fthe order. I hove dox ens of letters lying on my desk from nimiiers anu miners, whose boys are squandering their wuges and who ure being ui into lcloiis habits through Sunday pool room associa tions. Not only are these complaints rrniu Portland parents but tliev come from nil portions of the county. Some of the strongest appeals are from Troutdale. Oresham. Lenta, Mt. Scott, Wootllowu and St. Johns. The entire lounty Is embraced In th Sunday closing order. I shall coin M the places to close their doors at midnight Saturday and remain closed until Monday morning." There are perhaps .100 poolrooms la the county. Word and Kvans havo determined that the Sunday-closing order can ho enforced under tho Oregon "blue law", hoctlon 2l2."i of Lord's Oregon Laws. The statute provides that "if any person shall keep open any store shop, groiery. bowling alley bllllnrd reoin or tlppHng-houso for purposes of labor or tralllc. or any pliuo of nmiisemeiit on tho llrst day of the week, commonly known us Sunday he shall, on conviction, be sentemeil to pay a line or from $f, to ?:,0 for onch offense."
