More than ono million dollars worth of rnlsInB woro exported from the United States In tho Inst fiscal year, tho quantity, 18 million pounds, being fnr in oxcess of tho total ex ported In any enrlier year. Tho im ports during tho year amounted to only 2 million pounds, against 10 million pounds in 1900 -and ns high as CO million pounds in certnln years prior to tho devolopmont of produc tion in tho United States. Compar ing 1011 with 1000, tho figures of tho Bureau of Statistics, Department of Commerco nnd Lnbor show thnt exports grow from 2 Vj million pounds to over 18 million pounds, nnd their vnluo, from $140,000 to $1,009,000. During tho snmo porlod Imports of rnlslns fell from 10 1-3 million pounds in 1900 to 2 mil lion In 1911, nnd their vnluo, from $531,000 to $237,000. Browning, Rector 4 9:30 A. M. Sundny school. As n boy In tho early '70'a I re member gojng to tho store for my mother and paying nothing less than $1.00 per pound for ten. Flqur was C or 7 cents per pound. Sugar 8 to 10 cents. Coffee 40 nnd 4G cents. A pair of high boots, such as 1 woro In tho winter, cost $7.50 or $S.00, nnd to make them Inst they wcro copper-toed. My father wns a coun try parson with never more than $1,000 per annum. I'm a freo lance, enrnlng from $2,500 to $4, 000. 'TIs true, I'm no better off than was my father, but the fault is mine, not tne cost of necessities. I pay GO cents a pound for tea, 3 or 4 cents for flour, 5 to 7 cents for Bugnr, 29 to 95 cents for coffee. $3.50 to $4.00 for the boots without protectors. Then why Is It so? Simply this: I hnvo altered tho whole plan of living ns compared with my father's time, nnd Instead of doing tho thousand nnd one things personally which my parents did for themselves, I employ others to do them for me, nnd, of course have to pay them. A dollar Is not a unit of gold, but a unit of labor. Now, labor is dear In this country becnuso It is scarce, and for no other reason. 'TIs true, I pay 25 cents n pound for stenk, but this Is not due to a beef trust or robbor this or robber thnt, but becnuso of tho mnnncr in which I demand my steak shall bo handled nnd handed to me before I will receive nnd pny for It. As a matter of fnct, I could not havo ob tained such a steak nt GO cents per pound fifteen years ago. If I do ns my daddy did, get up In tho morning, take my market basket and walk to tho places whero tho samo quality of food and veget ables as ho bought aro still handjed, I will get them nt the snmo price. But If I demand my steaks nnd chops brought to my door handled from the day the anlmnl was born in tho most intelligent nnd scientific mnn ncr, fed and killed In up-to-date con dition, hauled to me In nutomoblles, wrapped in wnx paper and delivered by n boy In n clean whlto apron, I havo to pay for tho labor Involved. Twenty-Flvo CYntK Riijn Hotter Menl. Again, ns n boy In tho enrly '80's, working ns n clerk for flvo dollars per week, in Phllndolphtn, I, receiv ed GO cents for Bupper-monoy when wo woro required to work extrn. Of course, I hunted up n 2G-ccnt placo to eat, so that tho othof quarter would buy soma nmusement or othor. Today, for 25 cents, I can get n bet ter meal In Now York restaurants of tho Bijmo class, tho latter being much elennor. In short, It is not tho cost of liv ing thnt has gone up, but tho stand ard of living. All tho howling wo country boys brought up on n dollnr-n-dny stand ard may do, Is usolcss, so long ns wo try to mnko our now ton-dollnr-a-day Income pay for n flftcon-dol-lnr-a-day stylo. I tried housekeep ing In London In 1904. Rented a furnished houso In tho southeast sec tion, Now Cross. Kept tho samo woman who hnd worked for tho reg ular occupants. Wo tried to llvo on our regular Now York Ilarlom-flat standnrd. Tho woman oponcd her eyes, so did we, at tho bills. Yes, living is chenper In "London, but only by tho London-living standard. So It Is In Now York, if wo stick to tho squedunk standnrd. Lnlxirlng Class Llvo Better. But tho laboring man? A few years ago wo had no such man in America. Ho doesn't exist today In certain parts of Now York, Pennsyl vania, Ohio, Indtann, Illinois, or Texas, or many othor states. Wo hear a lot about his suffering on tho East Side. Go, look whero ho camo from. As a matter of fact, ho don't know how to llvo any bettor than ho does. Ho Is living so much hot ter thnn ho did, thnt ho can hardly stand It. I, nn Amorlcnn by eight or ton generations of resldonco horo, wont to school with boys nnd girls of tho snmo class; patches on my pants nnd uoots woro common, nlso on those of tho othor boys. My boy goes with tho children of fnthers who do not yot wenr n hat and mothers to whom a shawl Is still enough, nnd yet I look In vnln for tho patches on their pnnts or coppor on the toes of tholr shoes. E. J. Konnov In American Magazine. BABIES CHECKED WHEN MOTHERS SIT IN PFAVS KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 29. A check-stand for babies Is tho latent Innovation at tho Indepondonco-av-onuo Chrlslan Church here. It has been Inaugurated by tho wlfo of tho pastor, Rov.Georgo II, Combs, who has confided to his wlfo thnt n num bor of the women hnd told him that thoy could not como to hear him preach unless, thoy brought tholr bab ies, and thnt often tho youngsters dis turbed tho services. So Mrs. Combs took tho mnttor up with tho Lndles' Aid Society, nnd ns a rositu n room wns fitted up with THE ALARMIST It seems wo'ro nil In danger, for 1 met n man today, who told me that tho Government Is going far astray; ho said the corporations own our Congress, heart and soul, that Courts aro but tho instruments to aid In grabbing coal. He said that labor has no rights, thnt nil of us our slnves, thnt trusts nnd combinations make our empty d nner pnlls; ho drew some awful pic tures of his starving folks nt home, nnd a President more cruol than tho man nt burning Rome. He wnllcd about the prices of tho food he has to buy; he tore his hair, and gnashed his teeth nnd mention ed with n sigh, thnt other countries o'er the sens, are better for mankind, that when n man Is born horo, he leaves all hope behind. I've thot this talk nil over, since the shndes of night hnvc come, and find tho mnn Is foolish, 'though ho hnd mo going some, for If those other countries so much hotter nro thnn this why don't we Just move ovor nnd revel there In bliss. Now, If he's right, Vm wrong, for when tho Stnrs nnd Stripes I see, I Just bwoII up with Freedom, nnd no mnn enn trend on mo: but, tho mnn who did the tnlklng 'bout his stnrv Ing folks, today, still hides around tho corner from a Job a block away.
