(Continued from last Saturday) The preventing of tho snnd from drifting has boon tho object of somo I experiments with snnd-blnding gras ses nnd sedges which have been .planted In n few plnces on the bay side of the sand spit. The experi ence hero, as In other parts of tho country, haB shown the difficulty In securing a protective covering of vegetation upon nreas where tho sand Is In an active stato of motion. Thus far but little success has been met with tho plants used. Where, local protection from drift Is desir able various mechnnlcnl means havo proved moro or less cffectlvo In other regions of somewhnt similar condi tions. Tho question of controlling tho movement of the sand dunes and tho protection of nreas from the drifting of tho sand is fully discussed in a bulletin Issued by tho department. The soli of tho Illncklock loam, to n depth of 14 to 24 inches, varies from n light loam containing a very notjcenblo content of fine snnd to a rnther heavy, smooth-textured loam. The color of the soil ranges from gray to brown or blnck. Tho subsoil consists of n reddish or brownish gray fine sand.
