Last night u bunch of North Hend men were out for a good time nnd the Hist thing the town knew the whole bunch was building a rnllrond there. A large ninount of lumber was piled around the building formerly occupied by the A. W. Myers store and the crowd used this ns n nucleus for their imitation railroad. Tim bers were laid for ties, planks made the rails and an imitation train was made from empty barrels nnd kegs. There were labelled "S.P." in large red letters and this morning the first down town visitors did not know what to make ot it. Tho Imi tation rnllwuy stretched for over a block. O, '. Schenck of the Hlltmoio Forestry school who arrived here yes- terday with about fifty of his stu dents to study tho timber Industry here, is enthusiastic over Coos Hay. While ho hns not yet had time to see much of tho forests around here, he declares the timber and natural beauty surpasses his grcntcst exnec tutlons. Accommodations for tho lnrgo number with him were dlfllcult to find nt first, the hotels nnd lodging houses being pretty well filled by tho largo number who have arrived on the Bay recently. However, the Chamber of Commerce got busy nnd ns a result n number of private homes hnvc nr ranged to nccommodate ninny of the students. En route here, they stopped nl Portland Columbia river points ntul visited the lumber mills nnd logging cunips there. In spenklng of tlwlr plans nnd tho trip, Dr. Schenck said "We have two permanent camps In the states, one nt Hlltmore, N. C . and nnother In Michigan, nnd now we nre to ndd one on tho Pnclilc coast, nt Coos Hay. This will give us three In the states and one In Oormnny. Ench yenr a clnss will visit these camps nnd study forestry, which means lumbering. In tho minu test dotulls. It will give tho stu dents a broad understanding f con ditions nnd methods ns they nre em ployed In the different localities. "I must confess thnt I wus sur prised to llud such wonderful timber In Oregon." Dr. Schenck continued, "and still more wonderful the humnii Ingenuity In handling these trees. The forests out here nre liner than I ever dared dream, although I have seen pictures und read detailed des criptions of your forests. A person can never realize whnt lnrgo trees nre until he sees them with his own eyes. Dr. Schenck believes Oregon and the Pnclilc northwest will be the great lumber supplying district nfter the opening of the Pannmii canal. "Tho south has bodies of pine tha: will last a long tlmo to come, but with tho opening of the Panama canal fir from the Pnclilc north west will Invado the plno market be cause the lumber Is far superior. Con sumers will prefer fir to pine, espe cially slnco much of the plno now bo Ing cut is second growth. "There Is a mistaken Iden In Amer ica that n contrast exists between for estry nnd lumbering. Forestry Is 00 Iter cent lumbering and 10 per rent, well you may call It. science." NORTH HEND NEWS. Mrs. Tonu McKay, who hns been very ill, Is getting nlong nicely nt the homo ot Mrs. Schroek.
