It wns grontly enjoyed by the fow Coos Bay teachers In nt- I tendance who find It difficult to nt- ' tend these gatherings when they are j held outside In different cities of the istntc. ! Of educational matters, much could 'bo said. It will be a pleasure to i do so at another time. i F. A. TJEIKJE.V. Our Odd Suit Editor Times: Any comment on the recent meet ing of tho National Educntlonal as sociation at San Francisco seems In adequate; tho gathering wns so big in scope, spirit, excellence, numbers, In everything. A fow generalities, briefly told, mny bo of Interest. Attendance. Owing to the hot weather In the East, tho delegations of teachers from tho states east of tho Hock lex were small; soma of tho Pacific coast states, too, were not generously rep resented Oregon, for IiiBtnnce. Cali fornia teachers were very loyal to their stato and to their metropolis and .turned out In large numbers. Tholr loyalty did much to Increase tho record of general attendance. The absence of eastern teachers brought feelings of depression to many west cm teachers who bad gone to convention with great cxpcctatolns of nttondlng Its sessions with friends any many wore ready to leave tho city by Wednesday. Homo did so. Tho press recently made the state ment, unnlllclally I think, that this meeting of the association woul 1 rank about third In slzo with the incotlngs of formor years. I hardly think (t will rank so high. Management. Tho crowds of dulegates were splendidly handled by tho nlllceiH of the association and their assistant There was no confusion or tedious waiting anywhere. Sumo credit for this should be given to Mr. Irvliu Shcpnrd, secretary of tho N.E.A., who has had large experience In manag ing these annual gatherings ami homo , to tho ample accommodations of tho city of San I'muclsco, the Ferry building, for Instance, was almost porfectly adapted to the business needs of tho convention, and the ho tel accommodations wcro ample to a fault, someone remarked that there wcro so pesky many hotels that he could not find anyone.' Hem-Ills. A great convention has much to offer apnrt from regular sessions and prearranged progrnms. Much Is gain ed font tho "follows who nru there and ones association with them" ns David Thwlng said of a college.
