At the age of IS she mar ried Hiram Nlday. and In 18R2 she and her husband nnd two chlldrei crossed tho plains with ox teams. They woro on tho road six months. Tho couple stayed In tho Wlllnm otto vnlley that winter but In 1SR3 moved to tho Applegate vnlley in Josephine county. In 1S51 they lo cated tho Nlday donation claim on Jhmp-orf-Joo and In 1855 Hiram Nl day died, leaving his wlfo mono In a wPd Indian country with three Bitnll children, tho youngest being on'y 8 days old. October 5, 1855, tho Indian war broke out. Mrs. Nlday nnd children were the llrst to escape murder by the Indians from lied Halsted ferry above where Grants Pass now stands. Sho mado hor escape to Fort Loland by tho aid of Judge Walter of Kit gone, who, with three othor men, was on his way to Jacksonville. Thoy met tho Indians at Jump-off-Joe croek nnd wero nttacked but, nevertheless, thoy rotumod to tho homo of Mrs, Jfldny and holpod sho aud lior chll- , droit to Fort Iceland. Had It not boon for tho bravory of theso four mou, Mrs. Nlday would have boon murdered as woro tho Harris and Haines families. In 1S51, Mrs. Nlday married David Sexton, who died four years 9iiro. Caroline Sexton was tho mother of llvo children, two of whom aurvlvo; Mrs. T. G. Owen of Marshfleld, Oro rou, and C. D. Soxtou of Hiiro. Sho also reared flvo orphan children bu sides hor own, ouo being V. J. Hits sell, ux-sherlff of Josephine county. Mrs. Sexton wns badly biuiEcd lit u bridge wreck eleven yoars ago nt Jiimp-off-Joo.
