Sorcnson was the vic tim of n surprise last Saturday night the occasion being his hlnuklcth birthday. It. M. Prcsscy had the misfortune to get his arm broken last Tuesday by a log rolling on It at his Four Mile ranch. Joseph Coumcrllh and son, D. J. Coumerilh, have bought the Co utile r-ilh-Cbrlstensen Co.'s stock. The present intention Is to close out the major portion of the stock and lay in n new stock of ladles' ready-to-wear goods and furnishings. The new firm will bo known as the Dan don Dry Goods Co., and D. J. Cou mcrllh will bo the manager of the business and for the present will be nsslstcd In the store by Mrs. Cou mcrllh. Tho now Bnndon nasket Splint factory Is now In full operation, turning nut the splints at the rate of 45,000 a day. The splints nro made from clear spruce, are 32 Inches long and 2 1-4 Inches wide. Tho machinery was Installed by C. D. Edwards, who had been hero look ing over tho situation with tho view of locating. The splints aro being niado for tho Portland Fruit Daskct nnd Handle Co., of which firm Mr. Edwards Is a member, The new Kruno Shlnglo mill Just this side of Prosper started up last week. This company was Incorpor ated the first of the year and num bers among Its stockholders some of tho best lumber nnd timber men on tho river. The ofllcers of the com pany are E. E. Johnson, president, A. E. Kruso vice-president and man ager, nnd John Anson, sec. and troas. Tho now mill's capacity Is In the neighborhood of C0.000 shingles per day. Tho logs for tho mill will bo supplied by Aason Bros. A LOCOMOTIVE OF APPLES. All the OAterior parts of this Immense "fruit englno" were com--posed of largo and beautiful npplos, of which thousands woro used in tho completion of tho work. At tlrat n wooden frame nn oxnet duplicate of n railway onglno was built, and all oor this were placed npplos, In tasty nnd artistic patterns. When all this work was comploted there stood tho perfect figure of a big "npplo locomotive." Under a bril liant olectrlo light tho work present ed n magnificent nppearance fairly dazzling. To build such n figure re quired much enre, artistic skill, time nnd no Ilttlo exponso. Tho total length of this "fruit onglno" Is twenty-six feet, while from tho np plo rondbed and ties up to tho top of the stnek Is noarly ton feet. No letall has been omitted In the work. Every appurtenance belonging to n real gonulno locomotive Is thero, In cluding cowcatcher, boiler, head light, stack, whistle, boll, sand cham ber, cab and tondor. Senator Wood's bill providing for n now system of creating and nn nnnoxntlon of counties passed the Sonnte, but on finding an error In enrolling of the bill, it was recon sidered nnd will coino up again for n vote tomorrow. But two votes were registered against it. Sonntor Wood's nnnoxatlon plan provides for a voto of 50 per cent or more In each division Interested, while tho creation of a now county 'is operated on a basis of 65 aud 36 per cent of the votes in tho district. Aid District Fairs. What promises to bring out a flood of bills for nld of county fairs enmc In the passage by tho Senate of tho Bean and Calkins bill. Tho bill asks for nn Increase of appropriation from $3, GOO to $4,S00 for the Southern Oregon District Ag ricultural Society and nn Increase of from two to four fairs. Objections came from many Sena tors ns to the policy of increasing small fair appropriations, but they made n threat that it tho bill should pass there would bo many more ap propriation bills of that nature.
