Tho building known as tho residence waB also sotnowhnt aged. Tho flro was discovered about 2 ' o'clock, S. W. Van Zllo and watch man nt tho box factory bolng tho first to detect It. Tho blazo apparent ly stnrtcd In tho North fiend hotel annex. Ho lowored him self from tho window on a ropo lad der ho had for painting work. Tho fresh water pressure was not adequate to do very good work but soon tho now mains supplied salt wator and Immediately tho flro de partment bogau to get control of tho conflagration. A light, easterly wind was blow ing and for n timo it was feared that tho wholo section of tho town between tho North Bond hotol and tho Coos Bay Grocery company would bo wiped out and nearly eve ry one was carrying goods and other stuff from tho buildings in that sec tion. An unusually largo crowd had re sponded to tho flro nlarm, tho flames shooting so high In the air that it attracted general attention. Tho horses and rigs woro takon out from tho North Bond Livery sta bles, which was directly across tho street from tho burning hotol build ing, and a largo portion of tho stocks of tho "Whlto House Store" nnd Van Zllo's furniture storo woro nlso re moved. Ho carried $3,500 insurnnco on tho property. L. M. Noblo said that tho annex building cost him nbout $5,000. Ho had no insurnnco on it and ho did not havo any on tho livery barn. Ho estimates his damago 'on tho latter at about $1,000. Mr. Noblo says ho is confident that tho flro was tho work of n "flro-bug." Thero had been no fires In either building for somo time. When tho flro was first discovered, an appeal was sent to tho Marshflold flro department for aid but iien tho latter had turned out, word was re ceived that tho North Bond depart ment was ablo to combat It A largo number of Marshflold peo plo wont up on tho Flyer and O'KolIy boats, arriving thoro shortly boforo tho blazo wns extinguished.
