MnHHNHIHMMHiinHnlHIRnHHHHHHHHHIlIIBHHfl "Ft " THE COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1910 EVENING EDITION. Eve d in rvurai ungian It wns n brllllitnt moonlight night. but extremely cold. Our rhiiNo whirled rapidly over the frozen ground 'the postboy smacked his whip Incessantly, nnd n pnrt of the time his hordes were on n gallop, "lie knows where he Is going," said my compunlon, laughing. "nnd Is eager to arrive In time for some of the merriment nnd good cheer of the servants' ball. My father Is n devotee of the old school nnd prides himself on keeping up something of old English hospitality. lie wns al ways scrupulous In exacting our holi days nnd having us nround him on family festlvnls. It wns the policy of the good old gcntlcmnn to make his children feel that home wnn the hap piest plnco In the world, nnd I value this delicious home feeling ns one of the choicest gifts n pnrent can bestow." Tho squire ushered us nt onco to the company, which wns assembled In n Inrgc, old fashioned hall. It wns com posed of different branches of n numer ous family connection. They were variously occupied, nnd a profusion of wooden horses, penny trumpets nnd tnttcred dolls about the Iloor showed traces of n little troop of fairy beings that hnd frolicked through n happy dny. Whtlo the mutual greetings were go ing on between Itrncebrldgu nnd his relatives I had time to scan the apart ment The grate had been removed TIIK IUHCR WAS A MCttllV ONE. roin tho wide, overhanging llreplneo to make wny for n tiro of wood, In tho midst of which was an enormous log, glowing nnd blazing and sending forth A vast volumo of light and heat. This, 1 understood, wns the Yule log, which tho squlro was particular lu having brought lu nnd Illumined on Christmas ere, according to ancient custom. It wns really delightful to nee the old nqulro seated lu his hereditary elbow chair by tho hospitable flresldo of his Ancestors nnd looking nround him lllto tho sun of n system, beaming wnrmth And glnducss to every heart. Even tho very dog that lay rtrctchod nt IiIh foot, nn tto lazily shifted his position and yawned, would look fondly up In his master's face, wng his tall against tho floor ami stretch himself again to uleop, sure of kindness nnd protection. Supper wns announced shortly nftor our arrival. It was served up In n pnclous oaken chamber, tho panels of Milch shono with wax nnd nround Mblcn were sorcrnt family portraits, decorated with holly nnd Ivy. Beside tho accustomed lights, two great wnx tapers, called Christmas ctindles, wreathed wlt.h greens, were placed on a highly polished buffet among tbo family plate. Tho tablo was a bun- "flHlt tho snulra Trunin hi unnnop nt J frumenty, a dish made of wheat cakes j .boiled in milk, with rich spices, being $ a standing dish id old times for Christ 1 mas eve. I was happy to find my old uruu, uiiDcvu 7e, id iuc reunuo or he feast Tho supper had' disponed every one to gnycty, and an .old harper-was sum- moncd from the serrnnU' hall. 2hQ dance, like mot danced after sup per, was a merry ono, , Bomo of tho elder folk Joined in it, and tho squire himself figured down several coupled with a partner .with whom he affirmed ho bad danced at every Christmas for jaearly half a century. Tbo party broke ,up for the, nlgt?t with the kind hearted old custom of halting bands. An 1 passed through tho hall on the wny to my chnmber tbo dying embers of the Ynlo log stitl sent forth a dusky glow, und bad It not been the season when "no spirit dares stir ubrood" I should have been half tempted to steal from my room at midnight nnd peep whether the fai ries might not bo at their revels about tbo hearth. I had scarcely got Into bed when a Btraln of music seemed to break forth In tho air Just below tho window. I listened and found It proceeded from a band which I concluded to bo tbo waits from some neighboring village. 1 drew aside tho curtains to hear them more distinctly. The tnoonbenms fell through tho upper pnrt of tho easo went, partially lighting up tho nutl quated apartment. The sounds us they receded became more soft nnd nerlal and seemed to accord with quiet nnd moonlight. 1 listened and listened. They beenme more nud more teudcr nnd remote, nnd as they grad ually died away my head sank upon tho pillow, nud I fell asleep. Wash ington Irving A Unique Doll. Christmas TE CHESS AR MAN your father nt home, kid?" lie was not altogether an un pleasant looking man who ad droned the miostlou to n fair haired child alone on the veranda of a suburban villa late In the afternoon of the day befoie Christmas. The little girl stopped playing, frown ed prettily nnd answered: "My name's Muriel, not kid. nnd my papa never gets home till long nftcr I've gone to bed. Whnt's your name?" The hulking fellow averted his eyes and answered her question by asking another. "Who eNo lives with you?" "Oh. my little brother-vou hnven't seen hlin. have you? my mamma nnd Mnry. Mnry's the servnnt, you know." "Good day, young un." said the tramp ns he ambled away. "Muriel I'm called!" she shouted nft cr him. "Will you come ngnln?" "Thank'ec; I reckon I will," he nn Bwered. "Oh. wait n minute, pnpn; I'm so sleepy!" Muriel knelt up In her little bed. rub bed her eyes and shook her golden curls out. It was midnight. Having "wuuitu aiiu you ooi.sa now?" biik ASKLD. completely recovered from dreamland, she looked at the tall figure beside her bed nnd ghsped with delight when she realized that her long cherished deslro was going to be carried out. Papa bud often promised to play nt burglars with her, and there he wnH, quite ready, with the black mask covering his eyes nud n little lantern that gave only a wee light. "Oh, papa." she cried, "you do look n funny burglnrl We'll tnko mn'a Jew elry tlrst. Won't she bo surprised?" Tho midnight Intruder nodded. "Where docs ma keep it, Muriel?" ho nsked. "Burglnra don't know whero things are, you know. That's half tho fun of It. eh'r "Oh. you nro funny, papal Lot'B whisper softor. It's on tho dressing table In ono of tho little drawers, B-B-sh!" Muriel felt herself lifted shoulder high. "Now, then, kl Muriel." bo whis pered, "when wo pass your mamma's room, kl Muriel, yon Just point to If und keep as quiet as a mouse. That's tho proper way. Isn't It?" She nodded delightedly and did ns ho wished. "Whero are you going nowr abo asked almost Jnaudtbly as she- was be ing carried downstairs. "Why, somebody must keep watch. Don't you know that ono burglar tukes tbo things while another keeps watch r ,- t . . Ho carried her down Iqto tho cellar. It was very dark and cold, but Uuriol aid abo wasn't afraid because they wero only playing burglars. "Now, then, ki-Muriel." be whis pered, "you keep watch and don't make a noise," He slipped Into her tiny hand one small bar of icbocolato. "Thafa your sbarooJt the awasc." be, said and disappeared. Muriel giggled when, she thought of mamma's surprise. She listened a long tlmo for return footsteps and wonder ed, after alt If papa had been caught She was not at all comfortable, nor wns abo warm, and a few mtnutes lat er hor pretty eyes closed, her bead dropped, and she drifted Into dream land. Then she wns awakened by her fnthor. Tbo mask was gone from tbo face, and ho looked pale and troubled. "Ob. you've come backP she whls pored, remembering tbo last caution sho had received. "Why are you here, dearie?" asked her father. "You brought mo, papa. Don't you remember when wo were playing bur glars?" Muriel's father telephoned to tho police nud reported the strnngo bur glary. In the morning be spent nn hour in convincing his little girl that ho was not tho man who wore tho mask. "Well, pnpn," she snld In the end, "ho was n very good Christmas bur glar, wasn't he?" Books as Christmas Gifts. It Is n great mistake to choose Christmas books entirely by covers and guesswork, and It Is well to re member that It Is better to postpone i gift for a few days rather than to buy n poor book If you feel that you must buy books without reading them you can nt least select somethlug pub lished by Arms of good reputation, knowing that they will bo careful what Is scut out under their names.
