Clarence Gould of Allegany has ordered a large logging engine, which will be delivered soon. Rig Log Raft. A big log raft was brought up from South Slough to the Smith mill last night. It was towed by the steamer Powers. Lost Her Propeller. The launch Tioga this morning lost her propeller while coming down the river. The accident happened near the Rogers' place and the passengers on the Tioga were transferred to the launch Ex press and brought to the city. Const Brings Fish. The launch Coast arrived from the Rogue River yesterday afternoon and brought a large cargo of salmon for the Union Fisheries Company. The salmon was shipped from here to the Portland market. McCormac left to-day on the Break water for Portland, and from there will go to St. Martin's Springs on the Columbia River, where he hopes to find relief for the rheumatism. The doctor may be gone a month or longer as his stay will depend upon what benefit he receives at the springs. Was Hero Years Ago. W. H. P. Bronnell, who has been In the Rogue River country for the past fourteen months holding a position as book keeper, left thls'mornlng on the Rose burg stage-for his home In San Fran cisco. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Bronnell lived at Empire and was In the employ of the old Southern Ore gon Improvement Company. Has Birthday. Geo. N. Bolt, of the Coos Bay Cash Store, Is to-day celebrating his birthday. Despite his youthful appearance, Mr. Bolt acknowledges to forty-seven sum mers and forty-seven winters. He Is a native Oregonlan, having been born In Klrby, Josephine county. His grandmother lived to be 104 years old and he has strong hopes of equal ing her record for longevity. ROGER AVERILL, who has been In Portland1 for several months, has returned to Coos Bay. TIMBER BURNING. MISS STELLA O'CONNELL returned to-day from the Maze, where she has been enjoying an outing. D. F. BARNARD of North Bend has taken a position in Forest and Bradfleld's barber shop on Front street. W. F. LANGUILLE of Portland, who has been In the city on business, left this morning for the Coquille Valley. Several Forest Fires But Damage Is Not Great. Forest fires near Coos Bay are making a heavy smoke, but so far no great damage has been done. There has been a fire near Empire for sev eral days and another fire got started In the Kinney property near Plat B. It was not causing any particular damage nor destroying much timber, but men have been at work fighting It to prevent further spread. DROWNED IN UMPQUA. JAMES R. WALL has returned from Portland, where he has been for two weeks ona business and pleas ure trip. MR. and MRS. JAMES SCOTT of Portland are In the city visiting Mr. Scott's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Scott. Ross Rogers, aged fifteen years, and the son of R. W. Rogers of Suth erlln, was drowned In the Umpqua. River near Roseburg. The boy was in bathing. a week or so on business and pleasure. MISS CARLIE REED of Portland, who has been visiting Miss Nora Tower, left for her home to-day on tho Breakwater. MRS. DAN KEATING will bo home on the next trip of the Redondt). She has been visiting In California. Rack torn Outing. J. Albert Mat son and Nels Rasmussen have re turned from a few days' outing on South Coos River and aro 'busy ex plaining to their friends how It was that their endeavors to aid in the Audubon Society's qrusade to protect the feathered denizens of the forests led to the report that they had been "poaching." While up the river, Mr. Matson says, they noticed a large number of 'bird hawks in the vicinity and they took their guns out and were shooting a few. Some mis guided individual, who had evidently net heard c the Audubon Society, In formed Cal. Wright, deputy game wardon, that somebody was shooting HI) where there were supposed to be some fine young grouse.
