f THE COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 1910-EVENiNG EDITION. &ffi Ml " H m m mm W. C. T. U. NEWS. Alcohol, as a detriment to mental development, Is rapidly com:ng under the ban of ho leading educational In stitutions of the country. Orders to serve no Intoxicating liquors at senior receptions or society houses of the .Sheffield Scientific school at Yale have been given by Prof. Russell Chitten den, school director. That commercial travellers do not consider license an aid to business prosperity, is evidenced by the fact that sixty-two travelling salesmen of the city of Rockford, 111., signed a petition for no-license. Do you remember what the old doctor in Robert Chambers' story, "The Danger Line," said to the young clubman? This was It: "Alcohol is poison, and it has not and never had in any guise the slightest compensat ing value for internal use. It isn't food. It's poison. It isn't an aid to digestion. It is a poison. It isn't a life saver. It is a life taker. It is a parasite, forger, thief, liar, brutalizer, murderer! There Isn't and there mever has been one word to say for Jt, or any excuse except morbid pre disposition or self-inculcated inclina tion for swallowing It!" About six hundred thousand meet ings have been held the last year un d(fr W. C. T. U. auspices, or addressed fcy W. C. T. U. speakers. The society, the largest woman's organization in the world, constantly Increases in membership. The gain in 1909 above al losses was eighteen thousand and -ihlrteen members. Each woman vho joins tne v. c. t. u., paying the annual membership fee, belongs not only to her local union, but also to the State, the National and the "World's W. C T. U.
