MALONEY Editor and Pub. lAN E. MALONEY News Editor PROVISION FOR PARKS. COOS BAY CITIES in general and Marshfleld in particular, must not neglect making provision for parks while the land may be ob tained at reasonable prices. It mat ters not what Is the ultimate destiny of this city, 10,000, 100,00 or 1,000, 000, there will be need of public parks and playgrounds, and the present Is the time to get them. The mistake which everyone of the older cities has made is that of delay with the conse quent enormous Increase in the prices of the lands to bo acquired. At present there are a number of tracts of land in Marshfleld which liave splendid possibilities for scenic beauty, that can bo acquired by the city now very reasonable, but later the experience of the B street dock property which the city acquired may bo repeated and several times present prices have to be paid. We do not now realize what the need for parks and playgrounds in this city ten or twenty years hence. It is deplorably short sighted for a city that has such opportunities as Marshfleld now possesses to sacrifice these opportunities for purely selfish reasons. The argumont of cost has no merit whntover. The parks can never be a burden to the city, and the Increase In real estate values will make them at all times a good Investment. Cen tral Park, New York City, Is the host Investment In every way that that city has over made, and In a lesser degree every city has had a similar exporlonco with its parks. Only a short time slnco The Times published n letter written by C. A. Smith to the Marshfleld Chamber of Commerce urging tho necessity of this Important feature of the future- growth of the city. "t Unfortunately tho people of Marsh Hold havo not taken this park situa tion seriously enough. We aro all too much engrossed In our personal and private affairs. But In a fow years, If half our dreams come true, wo will bo humiliated if wo find that this rich and resourceful section of tho country so gave itsolf over to things of sordid and selfish concern ns to forgot altogether the comfort und health and pleasure of Its people. COOii CO I" NT Y JOURNEYS. .Mrs. .7. H. Pi iii AYrites of Trip Along West Folk of North O Coos River. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Price, children and Miss Hadabaugh drove Sunday to visit in the region of the West Fork bridge of North Coos River. One thing noticeable first, Is that the people In that neighborhood used narrow tread wagons and we were in a wide tread buggy, making travel ling a little difficult; however, the roads were in fine shape. We found Mr. and Mrs. Dagget in fine health, but Mrs. Dagget's brother Les. Gray, was not so well as we would liked to have seen. They have a fine ranch and a comfortable home. One meets surprises at times and we were surprised to find a fine piano so far above navigation. Mr. and Mrs. PIdgeon have left the Michelbrlnk ranch and have found a beautiful site on which to erect a cozy little house, where they expect to make a flno home. Brown leg horn chicken were scampering in all directions. They have about 130 of them. We did not go as far as Mr. Brem er's ranch, but saw most of his fam ily, and must say they look the pic ture of health. Mrs. Hansen and children, who have been spending a year in Ger many visiting her parents, was in Portland and had to stop a few days as her childien came down with the measles. Mr. and Mrs. Hansen live about nine miles above Allegany. Pete Michelbrlnk and mother are living in a little home of their own. John Michelbrlnk and wife have a little home of their own just before coming to the bridge. Mrs. Soule was visiting In North Bend, so we did not stop to see them, but their ranch looks fine. Mrs. Roberts, who lives a little above the Devil's Elbow, is bedfast with the rheumatism. She is a patient sufferer and Is a lesson to the rest of us complaining mortals. Mr. Roberts Is starting a chicken ranch. The fact Is, all the West Forkers are firm believers In chick ens, mo3tlyb rown leghorns. John Porter looks hearty. He says he and the boys are getting along fine. It Is very noticeable that all these people believe in clean fields, not weed patches. Every field we saw was clean. Mr. Todd has a ranch and fine bungalow near the Elbow. CATARRH CANNOT BE CURED. with LOCAL APPLICATIONS, as they cannot reach the seat of the dis ease.
