Did you see tho comet today? If you didn't, don't you think you are losing your eye sight because a whole lot of people who havo, a clean bill from eye specialists didn't see it either. Many people claim they saw it but now a discussion has aris en whether.it was tho comet or Ven us that they thought they saw. They claimed the astral object was about midway in the heavens of the southwest. The comet is supposed to be in the east, according to astrono mers, and also is alleged to bo invis ible in the day time. However, all kinds of prophesies have been made concerning what it is apt to do to this old 'earth and it may bo that it got out of its course and slipped one over on tho astronomers. There was a regular lineup along Front street most of the forenoon of comet gazers. W. U. Douglas after rubbering nu tll his neck was stiff and his eyes were full of tears declared there are either a lot of liars in town or I am going blind because I can't see it.' Dr. Straw said that by straining his eyesight and using a well known North Bend man's imagination, he thought ho saw it. Did It Effect Sim? A number today have called atten tion to tho extraordinary sunset on Coos Bay last evening. They declare it was the most beautiful and won derful sunset they ever witnessed and are wondering whether or not the comet had any effect on it. Mrs. Henry Sengstacken was one of the first to notice the extraordin ary features of it and gives a graphic description of the golden yellow ef fect it had on the hills across the Bay. Dorsey Kreltzer also noticed it and says it seemed to lessen distance, the hills across the Bay appearing much nearer than they really are. MRS. WALKER of Cooston Marshfield shopper today. is a JAS. WHERE 10 SEE iLLEUOIT Prof. Campbell of Lick Obser- . vatory Issues Statement About It. SAN FRANCISCO, May 12. Pro fessor W. W. Campbell, director of Lick observatory, gave out the fol lowing interview concerning Halley's comet: "From now on, observers who aro not in tho strong glare of electric lights should have no difficulty in ob taining a good view of the comet. They should look for it duo east Just before tho first traces of dawn ap pear, about 10 degrees above tho horizon. Tho brilliant starlike ab ject a llttlo south of tho east point is tho planet Venus. The comet will be about ten degrees farther north, than Venus and a little further above the horizon. The tail will be seen pointing upward and to tho right, directly away from tho sun. "Tho morning view of the comet should improve as it gets closer to us, until May 16 or 17. The head will then probably be visible for three or four days, to ordinary ob servers, in the glare of the bright, sky, while pnsslng the sun on May 18, and thereafter tho comet will be an evening object. "Its head for, a few evenings will bo just a few degrees north of tho west point. Unfortunately, the moon will interfere with views of tho tail quito seriously, I think for several evenings. The time was set for 2 o'clock, The hour to lay him away; A few dropped in to scowl and frown, But they wished they'd needn't stay.
