(By Associated Press.) NEW YORK, March 23. Jack Johnson, champion heavy-weight pu gilist, was placed under $5000 bond and committed to the Tombs Prison until ball Is furnished, when the case in which he is charged with assault ing Norman Plnder, a diminutive ne gro in an up-towa cafe, came up before Judge Mulqueen in the Gen eral Sessions Court today. The company recently asked a renewal of its old franchise, which has thirteen years to run, bjit the company wants a thirty-year fran chise so they can bond the project and raise money. Fire Chief Traver recently present ed a report showing that the city was sadly lacking in fire protection In the residence districts and in somo sections of the down town district and recommended extensions of mains nnd additional hydrants.
