HOW TO BEAUTIFY .MARSHFIELD. SHE TIMES is pleased with the an nouncement that the A. N. W. Club Is about to inaugurate an other campaign for the general beau tifying of the city. Tho effective work accomplished by the first an nual "cleanup day" is remembered with gratitude by all Interested In the welfare and appearance of Marsh flold. But It must be remembered that the beautifying of a city, like its successful administration depends ultimately upon no particular or ganization. Tho A. X. W. Club-can spur us on to a clean-up-day that will help temporarily, but whether or not the city as a whole Is beautiful or not depends upon its citizens. And In this direction each resi dent of Marshfleld whether residence has been long or short, has, by the fact, assumed a certain responsibil ity. Beauty In this sense is not a pure ly esthetic or sentimental matter, but has n decided practical value. A front yard ornamented with shrubs and a back yard cleaned of rubbish and decorated with a flower garden or two, not only mean more pleas ure to tho occupants nnd passerby but moro money to tho owner. ( By experiments recently carried on In Northhampton, Mass., It was de termined that wage-earners' homos with attractive plots of grass and flowers sold for in per cent more than those without them. A compe tition was carried on nnd prizes giv en for tho best decorated yards In certain districts. The project Is said to have been crowned with conspicu ous success. Would not be desirable for the A. N. W. to Inaugurate a movement of this description, nnd in its com mendable efforts toward beautifying tho city ovolve a scheme by which all citizens would naturally take part?
