If you don't make use of your goodness, what Is the good of it? -Only a night from old to new! Only a night and so much wrought! The old year's heart all weary grew, But said, "Tho new year rest has brought." Tho old year's heart Its hopes laid down As In a grave, but, trusting, said "The blossoms of tho New Year's crown Bloom from the ashes of the dead.'' The old year's heart was full of greed With selfishness It longed and ached And cried: "I have not half a need! My thirst Is bitter and unslaked. But to the New Year's generous hand All gifts In plenty shall return. True loving it shall understand. But all my failures it shall learn. I have been reckless. It shall be Quiet and calm and pure of life. I was a slave. It shall go free And find sweet peace where I leave strife." Only a night from old to new! Never a night such changes brought. The old year had Its work to do. No new year miracles are wrought. Always a night from old to new Night and tho healing balm of sleep. i .Each morn Is New Year's morn come true Morn of a festival to keep. All nights are sacred nights to make Confession and resolve and prayer, All days are sacred days to wake New gladness in the sunny air. Only a night from old to new; Only a sleep from night to morn! The now Is but the old como true. Each sunrise sees a new year born Selected. Two Is company and three a di vorce, says an exchange. Somehow or other a woman's fig ure seoms to fit any fashion. "Wo aro at peace .with all the world." Nicaragua doesn't count. No chronic loafer was ever threat ened with an attack of nervous pros tration. Ono finds very few people calling the hookworm by Its scientific namo unlcinara duodlnalls. "Man wants but llttlo here below." Usually a necktie or a pair of silk suspenders will satisfy him. A New York minister married a couple In poetry. If they aro ever divorced It will bo In prose. If there is anything funnier than a llttlo man with a big voice It Is a big man with a llttlo volco. A southorn nowspapor wants lying eliminated from tho game. But wouldn't that spoil tho game? If all men woro llnrs there would bo a lot of rivalry among them to ace who could hold the record! "GIvo Mr. Rockefeller crPdlt," urges a southern newspaper, 'He doesn't neod It; ho can pay cash. Some Coos Bay men are contrary enough to wnko up In tho middle of tho night and arguo with their own ' dreams. A California woman holds that lnrgo feet are ovldence of great brains. Maybe. But it's no plnco to carry thorn. If heaven ls half as beautiful as described, why should tho spirits of the blessed want to como bade to earth and tip tnbles? Sir Thomas Upton says It Is a good thing to bo born poor. Wo'll meet him half way and admit It Is a good thing to bo born. "Tho time la rlpo for a new politic al party," says a Boston man. Why spoil the blessed holiday season with euch gloomy thoughts? Oarrlo Nation may havo to trot out n tow Eskimos beforo somo folks will bollevo that sho has had two enulno offers of marrlago. l!!iSsVJ;EOREKI PUT (Ministers and others aro request ed to hand the Sunday church no tices not later than Friday evening to Insure insertion Saturday.) ON iW M Steamship Transferred From Portland Run to San Francisco. PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 31. On her arrival at Eureka this trip the steamship Eureka will bo withdrawn from service out of Portland. From the Humboldt County metropolis she will proceed to San Francisco. As yet no advices havo been received here as to what disposition will then he made of tho steamer. It is rumor ed that she will be placed on a short run out of the Bay City. The Eureka will be in command of Captain Poulsen, who was transfer red from the Santa Clara on tho ar rival of tho latter from San Fran cisco. Captain Doren, who was mas ter of the Eureka, will take a similar position on the Santa Clara. This steamer, which has been clearing di rect from Portland for San Fran Cisco, will now call In at Eureka on both the up and down trips. She will alternate with the steamship Geo. W. Elder, one of which will be leaving here every 14 days for Eu reka and San Francisco. From now on the North Pacific Steamship Com pany will have no steamer making port of entry calls at Coos Bay. Announcement of the withdrawal of the Eureka from the Coos Bay and Eureka route came as a surprise to tho shippers and general public. Making weekly trips sho had been running out of here in the freight and passenger trade for moro than a year. Sho had been providing a fine service and was well patronized. The craft has been one of the few coasters which had been coming and going with tho regularity of clock work. Tho;"company will ,still have three steamers plying between Portland and California ports. In command of Captain Hannah tho Roanoke will g through to San Pedro, stopping on both the down and up trips at San Francjsco. She has been fitted up for carrying three classes of passen gers ,the same fare being quoted as that charged by the San Francisco & Portland Steamship Company.
