WORST FLOOD 120 YEARS (Continued trom page 1.) flood. A few had been removed 1 by property owners prior to thefreshet. They state that every ranch on Coos River was flooded, BCrcely'"a half-acre of the bottom land 'In the valley escaped Inundation.' .. .-. . .. Somo driftwood had lodged against Dr. Tower's cottage, but did not damage It. The water got up Into Herbert Lockhart's , summer cottage. Tho current In both Coos River and Isthmus Inlet Is so strong that the gasoline launches cari hardly ply against them and the danger from floating logs, etc., Is great. Dr. E. Mlngus started up Coos River In the launch Telephone this morning, but finally had to give up and turn back. This morning, the tide brought the water dangerously near the top of the wharves along Front street. Many claim that If the freshet had come at full moon, the bay would have spread out over the wharves. Mall Two Days Late. Word from Myrtle Point late this afternoon was to the effect that the mall due there yesterday morning Would not reach Myrtle Point from Roseburg until tonight. This will mean that it will be two days late into Marshfleld. Yesterday, this section received Sunday's mall, " ' Steamer Coos River Cntight. The steamer Coos River,' which was moored to her dock' at the Stephen-Rogers place on South Coos River, was caught by the flood last night and carried with the boat house down the river and Is n6w' in the jam of logs and driftwood In the cut-off channel. She lost her smokestack but It is not believed to have been badly damaged other wise. , Many sheds and other stuff were swept away from tho Rogers ranch. AVorst Storm In Twenty Years. "This Is the worst storm and the biggest freshet Coos county has known In twenty years," remarked Dr. J. T. McCormac m 'a reminiscent, mood this morning. ''It recalls the winter of 1890 when the water was .so high that it swept everything out of uoos River ana we went wunoui mall for three months. Wo did not set any mall from about January r " ; until April 1, and then tho Arcada brought tons and tons of It from San Francisco. J. W. Bennett and son, Tom, made a trip to Europe that year and tho day before Christmas ho wrote a letter to mo from Charing Cross Hotel in Lionuon. Mr. uenneic completed his visit and returned to Coos Bay and was hero iwo months before I received tho letter." Save Logs. A largo force of men have been working almost continuously since early yesterday on the Coos River booms and It Is believed that most of the logs have been, saved. This afternoon, a pile driver is putting in somo now piling to strengthen tho sheer bottom near tho mouth of Coos River.
