OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY OF MARSHFIELD. Official Paper of Coos County. BEWARE OF THE ASSEMBLY. T HE TIMES Is in receipt of a card of invitation to attend a meet ing In Portland at which plans are to be presented for the purpose of annulling the direct primary law. The Invitation reads as follows: ' ''There is going to be a Repub lican' Assembly in Oregon. Repub licans are united for it. Demo crats' and pops oppose It. You are Cordially Invited to attend the Monthly Smoker of the Unlo'n Re publican Club of Multnomah county, to be given at Selling HIrsch hall, Wednesday evening, November 24, 19'09', at 8 o'clock p. m. A good time is promised. Good speaking rind' music. Cbm'e early and get a seat. Let us get together and renew acquaintances. F. E. Beach, E. B. ColWell, J. F. Kenctienf, A. B'. Manley, J. T. Gregg, house commit tee; S. C. Pier, President; Max G. Cohen, Secretary." The Times will not be represented ' at this meeting. The Times Is first, last and all the time unalterably op posed to any tampering with the direct primary law. The assembly proposition is but a thinly disguised plan of the Portland machine poli ticians who want to overthrow the direct primary law, direct' election of United States senators, and direct legislation under the initiative and referendum. Unable to amend the laws enacted by the people to secure a purer form of government, having lost the power of nominating candi dates, tho machine proposes to sub vert and ovorthrow the direct nomi nation system by "holding conven tions to be called assemblies in counties, and in tho city of Portlnnd for the whole state and select can didates for county offices, for tho legislature, and judicial and state offices Instead of lotting tho people make nominations direct. All nom inating conventions nro forbidden by law. Tho people should bo warn ed from this timo forth and every dny and every hour that If they yidld to tho olainor fpr holding poli tical assemblies for' such a purpose they will surrender itll they have gained In tho way of great funda mental roforms In Oregon. "How can tho republican state as sembly 'control' nominations, unless republican voters In tho primaries accept tho nominations," says tho Oregonian. "Thero will be no viola tion of tho primary law. Tho people will chooso just as In Portland's re cent city election." SUch sophistry! The Oregonlau knows well that tho offect of tho as sembly plan, . If successfully carried oiit, will bo to annul the direct prim ary law. So do the old machine loadors who are bapk of the move and so do the cbrpornto lnterosts that favor bosslsm to our present system. If those people did not think tho assembly scheme would ruin tho effectiveness of tho direct primary they would not bother with It. But those back of tho nssombly (know thnt if their schomo works thoy will get back Into tho saddle and tho direct primary law, though still up on tho statuto books will bo but a mockery. They know that the "assembly" will Uo attended by poli ticians and ringstors rwn all ovdr the stato. Thojv tfhc& hat cortnhi "leaders" or In other words party Kation. Those back of the assembly know that the assembly "recom mendations" will be considered by politicians as equivalent to nomina tions. After the assembly the un successful aspirants for "recommen datlons" Will have to withdraw from the field and support the winners just ad in the old convention days. Any man failing to "line up" fdr the assembly fiomlriee will be con sidered a bolter and every politician In the state' will have a knife wait ing for him. Tills Is? how the assembly will "control" nominations provided the plot of the scutlers can be carried out successfully. Tho plea that the assembly will riot cdntril nomina tions and Will ribf be inlmlca'l to the direct prlmriry law Is ranit hypo'cricy and everybody knows It. The Time3 Is a republldah news paper, rind it is not frightened by h'e statement' on the Invitation that "democrats and pops" oppose the assembly. Every honest, right think ing republican will oppose it. The Times thinks also that It doesn't add anything (o the popularly of this Invitation when it is tfnown that the secretary, Max Cohen, was recently corfvicted In Portland of extortion from a client, and now faces charges before the Oregon Bai Association TVh'ich will very likely result In' his disbarment from practice In tho 6re gbri cbtifts.
