The Portland Telegram says: "A live rattlesnake three feet long was aboard during several voyages of the steamship Alliance, running regular ly out of Portland in the coastwise trade. More than that, the repti.e was free to prowl about the steamer wherever his Inclination took him. "But his bnakeshlp Is now dead. The Alliance was fumigated and his remains were found neatly colled In the bottom of the hold, where the rattler probably fled to escape in haling the sickening fumes. But the Incense proved too much for him and he died. Tho body was hurled Into the river, but not until eight rattles and a bottom were clipped from his tail and saved as souvenirs. "His presence aboard the ship Was not known until after the steamer had been fumigated. The dead rep tile was stumbled onto while a search was being made of the hold to see if any rats had been killed by the fumes. "How the ratler got on the steam er can only be surmised. About thiee weeks ago it is said a snake charmer took passage for a port down the coast. It is not known de finitely, however, that he had any of his "pets" with him. But in the face of recent "findings" it Is believed that he smuggled them aboard In some manner and during the voyage one of them made his escape. "And since then ho had been mak ing his homo on the steamer, and probably venturing into the various berths after night. That he expired before fastening his fangs Into a pas senger, or even keeping In the dark where ho could not be seen, likely, saved the owners from being sued for heavy damages. At any rate there Is great lejolcing that the rat led passed over the Great Divide without leaving his marks behind." From the moment Bill Taft sets foot on the paved walks of the exposition he will have to hurry to keep pace with the various events in which he is scheduled to take part. His activities will have a wide range, too. And, then, the president's good nature is proverbial and his lieutenants have sent on word that the president will do his part to make the day a big success. His most formal appearance on the exposition grounds will be at a reception in the Washington state building at the official banquet. Following in line will 'be his initiation into the Arctic Brotherhood, the Alaska fraternal association. The president will also find time to address a monster crowd in the Natural Amphitheatre, mush down the Pay Streak, attend an elaborate luncheon, visit the United States government buildings and the Igorrote village. September 30 at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition will be one of the president's busiest days in the west and the people will be given every opportunity to see and hear him during his visit to the fair. PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 27. By a unanimous vote of the members of the Columbia Conference of ' the Methodist church, South, which is in annual conference in the First Meth odist church, South, the General Conference of the Denomination was memorialized to change the name of the church, leaving off the word "South, so that the denomination will be known as the Methodist church. The Introduction of this resolution struck a popular chord, and not a dissenting vot was raised against Its adoption. It was explained that the word South no longer had any mean ing, as all sectional strife had been obliterated, and that the church had organizations In all the states and nations of the world, and that the church should hereafter be known asK,?.
