MoiV !tv V mi i m I M i 'J Mr Si i WW WATER 01 City Council Takes Steps to Permit Other Business Last Night. That a determined effort will be made shortly to clear the water front and open a highway or street along it was shown last night when the Marshfleld city council insisted be fore they would grant a building per mit to the C. A. Smith -Lumber and Manufacturing Company for the erection of a warehouse just South of Central avenue and east of Front street that the latter agree to move It back forty feet from the harbor line when the others do. General Manager Oren and Mr. Smith per sonally agreed to this. The new warehouse is to be a one-story struc ture, 70x32 and will be built between the dock's edge and the present new building which the company has erected. Councilman A. H. Powers insisted that the Coos Bay Gas and Electric Company be required to give better service. He said that the arc-light on his corner has not been lighted for three weeks and two nights and that many other arc-lights are out a good share of the time. As the city is paying about $7 per month, for each arc-light, he said that it should Insist on getting something in return. Chairman Albrecht of the light committee, was instructed to take the matter up with the company and also to instruct the night watch to keep a record of the arc-lights and make regular reports to the council bo that the light company's bill may be trimmed if they don't give the .service. The contracts with the Coos Bay Paving and Construction were ap proved, P. S. Dow is bondsman for the company. Councilman Albrecht entered objection again, claiming that it wasn't right for the city to dishonor the special, street improve ment bonds by allowing a contractor to discount them ten per cent. W. S. Turiten was appointed elec trical inspector by Mayor Straw and the appointment ratified by the coun cil. The ordinance re-establishing the grade of Fourth street South, was read. As it makes a material change In the street near the Jas. Bennett Jiome where the lot was cut down about twenty feet to correspond with the present grade, established by En gineer Codding several years ago, Councilman Coke insisted that the property owners be given a hearing before final action was taken. Con sequently the matter was left over until next meeting. The grade of Market avenue from Fourth to Seventh street was reestab lished, a split street being arranged lor the hill near the Stutsman home. The city engineer was ordered to pre pare plans and specifications for im proving the street. - - The health committee was instruct- Afl in linvn (lush tnnka nttnniioii tn nil I .. .... . w -.. .. .......u .&. u , the sewer systems.
