Tlchenor, general or ganizer of the Woodmen of the World, and who is well-known on Coos Bay yesterday pulled off one of the most novel initiations that a fra ternal society has held ln the coun try. It was a monster initiation by BY-PRODUCTS OF DOUGLAS FIR EXHIBIT OF DISTILLATION PRO DUCTS FROM OREGON TIMBER IS VALUABLE OBJECT LESSON OF WHAT MAY BE DONE. MISSOULA, Mont., July 31. Acting In accordance with a request from the Secretary of the Missoula Chamber of Commerce, the District Office of the Forest Service, Is col lecting an exhibit for the Chamber of Commerce rooms. -The collection now ready comprises paper pulps manufactured from the various woods of this region, turpentine and many other products distilled from Douglas fir, and samples of wood which have been given a preserva tive treatment with creosote to make them resist decay. These products will be installed very soon. To this exhibit will later be added other specimens, making a complete display of each of the species found in Montana and of their products. Sections of the tree trunks, speci mens of the twigs and flowers, and samples of the lumber manufactur ed from each species will be shown. Wood which has been subjected to strength tests and photographs showing the methods used will be displayed. Other photographs and enlargements will illustrate the im portant phases of forestry work on the National Forests. The collection of paper pulps com prises samples made from each of the Important woods of the northern Rockies and shows the wood fiber ln both the unbleached and bleached state, with a statement of the amount of chemical required to bleach the fiber. These specimens, which were prepared In the Forest Service wood chemistry laboratory in Washington, show that from many of the Rocky Mountain spe cies, paper can be made of as good quality and as cheap as that ob tained from the eastern spruce, while the abundant water power In this region offers unexcelled advan tages for Its manufacture. Another valuable object lesson Is the collection of Douglas fir distil lation products presented to tho Forest Service by a wood distilling company of Oregon. These products include turpentine, rosin, tar, pitch, wood creosote, charcoal and various oils, as well as fruit sprays, disinfec tants, shingle stains and other use ful materials which are made from the oils. All of these come from tho pitchy wood of the common red or Douglas fir, which Is plentiful throughout the Rocky Mountains and Is the great timber tree of the Pacific Northwest. These products suggest great possibilities for the utilization of waste wood, as they can be obtained from pine as well as from fir. The sections of creosoted tics and timbers which were treated ' with preservatives ln Forest Service treat ing plants, .illustrate tho thorough ness of the methods which tho ser vice is now using ln its demonstra tion work, while teaching wood wmnmtmumttttmfflfflttmmtmnmtttmmttffimmffimmmffi8a mmmnmtrtmmt the W. O. W. lodges of Spokane, a class of over 300 taking the degrees. The initiation was pulled off ln street-cars, forty-one being required to accommodate the candidates and members present. The above cut 13 an advance picture of how Mr. Tl- WSM users the best way to treat timber so as to double Its life. The Dis trict Ofllce will supervise tho con struction and experimental opera tion of several wood preserving plants for private Arms during the coming summer, in order that the use of treated ties, poles, posts and mine timbers may come Into more common use and their value be bet ter understood. The species display will attempt to glvo an accurate Idea of each kind of wood that grows in the region. The twigs and cones, the barkbark, and the polished section of the tree trunk will help people to compare and Identify trees they dp not know, and tho samples of lumber will show the usefulness and beauty of each variety for finishing purposes. The samples of the test ed woods and the photographs show ing testing machines and methbds of operation will Illustrate the work which Is being done ln the govern ment timber testing laboratories.
