WASHINGTON, D. C, Juno 25. An investigation as to the practicab ility of reforesting the great areas of forest lands which have been devas tated by fire and which are now ly ing barren and unproductive is now being carried on by tho United Sta tes Forest Service in the Olympic National forest in Washington. The area selected for the experiments comprises several thousand acres, on the Soleduck river, and was at one time covered with a mugnlflcent for est of Douglas fir It was first burn ed over in 1890 and again in 1895. A third fire over almost tho same area occurred In 1906, destroying the last remnant of the original for est, leaving the entire area treeless. In some regions a second growth of trees will come In naturally aft er a burn, In the course of a few vears time, and where this happens artificial means of securing repro duction Is not necessary. There are, however, other burns, where new growth does not come in readily, due to adverse climatic conditions, absence of seed trees, or perhaps to the Impoverishment of the soil by repeated fires. Those areas are oft en of very large extent and in such cases some means, such as planting trees or sowing seed, is necessary, to restore tho forest. The burn in the Olympic forst Is of this nature and tho Forest Service is planning to con duct a series of experiments to de termine the proper methods of re foresting the nrea. Douglas fir will be the species used. It is believed that on tho greater part of the area simply scattering the seed over thf- ground in the fall before tho snow falls or in the early spring will bo sufficient to start a new growth. On other portions of tho area, however, where a growth of grass and weeds has covered the ground, it will probably be necessary to work the seed into the soil by raking or dragging brush over the ground. In some localities sowing by what Is called the seed spot meth od In which several seeds are drop ped together In spots and covered with soil will probably be success ful. To test these vnrious methods five experimental plots have been selected. Theso represent tho vari ous conditions found on the burn, such as difference in slope, altitude, exposure, and vegetation. This fall a large quantity of Dou glas fir seed will be collected and a quantity sown on each plot. Next spring tho experiments will be re peated and it is expected that the results obtained will Indicate what methods and what seasons of the year are best adapted to the condi tions found on this burn. When this is accomplished the Forest Ser vice will bo in a position to com mence the reforestratlon of tho Sole duck burn on a large scale and to re seed large areas each year. It Is believed also that the results' obtained will be of valuo not only In solving the prpblem of restocking the burn In tho Olympic national for est, but that much will bo learned concerning tho best methods of re foresting denuded areas on other forests throughout the Pacific north west, where conditions are similar, and that thus tho work may be large ly extended. TOPICS OF THE TIMES. Although we still hear occasional echoes of Harry Thaw, the world is beginning to rejoice in tho hope that it has heard the last of Count Bon! de Castellane. Joaquin Miller has given out tho Information that he will establish a colony of poets In the vicinity of his home in tho Piedmont hills, Cali fornia. Opposite Chandler Hotel T S OF HIGH SEAS TITANIC AND THE OLYMPIC., WILL BE LARGEST STEAM-' SHIPS IN THE WORLD ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT BELFAST. " NEW YORK, June 25. Although what will bo the largest two steam ships in" the world, the Titanic and the Olympic of the White Star Line, arc mere skeletons just now lu their million-dollar double gantry at Bel-, . fast, Ireland, the marine architects know exactly how they are going .to look when they start on Ihelr maid- -en passage to this port. From tt? plans and specifications the design? ers have made a wash drawing show- Ing how the monsters will look when In tho water and ready to sail. 'Al though at first glance the Illustration r suggests the Maurctanla and Lusi tanla, with their four gigantic fun nels, there Is something in the 'ap pearance of the new leviathans that Is typical of a White Star steam--', ship. '( The great height of tho new liners and the broad sweep of the bridge'- gives somo idea of their 60,000 tons, displacement. The builders have al most eliminated the old custom of carrying masts, and in this respect the largest ships In the world 're semble the Old Dominion steamers, the smallest passenger carrying ves- i sels in American coastwise servlce.r All the Old Dominion liners have only one mast, that being the fore mast. It Is so with the Olympic and Titanic. These two vessels are being built 7r simultaneously sldo by side in aA steel gantry that was begun a year before tho keels wero laid, and ' which cost over a million dollars.' The new liners will each be 860 feet long, with a 92-foot beam. The unusual beam Is equivalent to the'" length of some of the fast steam ' yachts of this port. The Olympic and Titanic will be ready for the "' New York, Southampton and Cher bourg servlco of the White Star line r In 1911. The builders are Harlaad . & Wolff. ' '& Over 19,000 employes of the United States Steel Corporation, sub- scribe for stock in that concern. ' When a hen attains her third year her laying capacity Is at its best. She ' will lay, on an average, from 300 to l 500 eggs in her lifetime.
