TpHE ONE IMPORTANT, overshadowing feature of tho Port bill clec- lr tlon next Monday Is tho fact that it Is simply and solely a good business proposition for Coos Bay and tho people of the proposed Port district In voting for this Port Commission the electorate of the Port district are not assuming any obligations. They are merely authorizing and making legal the choosing of men to carry Into effect the provisions of tho port bljl and the wishes of the people as they may be expressed under, the .Initiative and Referendum proceedings Every citizen of Coos county can readily serj and understand the ne cessity of havlns county officials to take care of the county. A hun dred years .ago it was not necessary but It is now. We have now reached a point in our development where it is Just as necessary to havo men whose special duty it will be to care for and protect the har bor. Without this Port Commission we cannot hope to hold the gov ernment, dredge or secure government appropriations for the improve ment of this harbor. Cenain selfi h interests for purposes of their own seek to befog the Issues and bunco the voters by frightening them with tales of bonds and big taxe3. There Is absolutely nothing In these stories. No bonds can be foisted upon the people If they do not desire them to be issued. No bonds are Involved In this election. Another roorback story is to the effect that certain men are to be appointed Commissioners and will use the position for purposes of graft. This statement is equally without foundation. The people will all have an equal vrfce In suggesting by petition to the governor who should be appointed and if any man appointed attempts to abuse his power 0Cj proves unfit, the people may promptly recall him by their votes. v Every possible safeguard is thrown around fhe new Port bill for the protection of the peoplejs interests and it is merely an opportunity by vfhlch they may do something to help themselves by protecting for the general public good the great natural harbor of Coos Bay. Every man who owns a dollar's worth of property In the proposed Port district should vote for this bill because it will add value to his holdings. r t , Every laborer should vote for It because It means work and wages and will help In building a city on the shores of tho bay that means prosper ity for every toller with head or hands. Finally every citizen who has the pride of place or home and with the. lntjncts of. patriotism and progress will vote for this bill because It means advancement and prosperity and involves no sacrifice or bur dpn To defeat this measure at this time would be to proclaim to the world that we are a backwoods community unwilling to do anything for ourselves and consequently undeserving to have anvthlng done for us. Certaiply no citizen of Coos county desires that record to go out to the world ns a result of Monday's election. Old Coos wll' expect every man to do his duty honestly and honor ably next Monday, and that duty Is to make the vote in favor of the Port Commission unanimous. SxVW COLLISION IN A VISION.
