Official Paper of Coos County. GOOD WORK BY THE DREDGE. . T IS DOUBTFUL if the 'people of Coos Bay fully appreciate the value aad advantages of the work beiag done by the dredge Ore- t gon and the farther good work that may be done. While it is trae that I the original intention was that the ' government operate the dredge with government funds, when so operated it is confised exclusively to govern ment projects while at present it is doing excellent work for waterfront property owaers along the bay in ad dition to the filling of the lowlands at a merely nominal price. It means a great deal to any community to have a great machine, costing $100. 000 placed at their disposal with only the cost of operating it and that is the advantage at present en- Joyed by the people of Coos Bay in having the dredge Oregon in opera- tion here. Since Capt. Peters has taken charge he has been doing ex- cellent'work. It would be an Inter- csting and valuable experience for every property owner and every citf- zen to visit the water front and see the Oregon at work. y A California butcher is reported to have fainted at the sight of blood the other day. Which, if true, proves that he is utterly unfit to take up the profession of barbering. A man 98 years of age was releas ed from a New York prison a few 'days ago, and no doubt the prison officials gave him some good advice on the subject of beginning a new life. COMPLETE NEW STATION. Its engines-will be operat ed with oil, while steam Is the power employed at present. When this task has been complet ed the Columbine will make a cruise '- up tho Washington coast to tost the , k audibility of the fog horn at Cape Flattery. Experiments at that point will also bo mnda. with various kinds of signals to ascortaln which is the most serviceable. A lot of Coos Bay men try to he fair, but not many would give them selves the worst of It in compiling; an autobiography. Coos Bay people seem to he divided into two classes on Sunday; those who get lonesome, and those who would like to be. When a C003 Bay man scolds he repeats too much, but the same com plaint is never made of the man In a complimentary mood. When a Coos Bay woman boasts of a perfectly faultless husband It is always safe to ask gently bow long he has been dead. Some Coos Bay people like to worry so well that they wouldn't en Joy being happy unless they could worry for fear they wouldn't always be. If you want to hear a terrible tale get a married woman to tell what she would do if her husband should "lay a hand" on hor; that Is, strike hor. Speaking of handicaps: What Is more tragic than the situation of the sympathetic woman at a funeral who finds she has left her handkerchlcr at home? Los Angeles now has a record of olght divorces In fifty-five minutes. Most of the parties, wo presume, woro In n hurry to catch the next train leaving town. Tho information that In northorn Wisconsin are stored 100,000 pounds of tobacco is likely tomak3 some Coos Bay men regret that they quit smoking so soon. "Now," says the Milwaukee Senti nel, "lot the editor of the Houston Post marry that recurrent 'red headed widow' and get her off his mind."
