Men and women never agree on the best way to "raise" children. The only reason some Coos Bay men don't crow like roosters Is be cause they can't. When an old man becomes dis gusted with the world you can't coax, him out of it as you can a younger man. A Coos Bay man's promise to a candidate Is as worthless as his The prevailing styles In New Year promise to a woman to quit smoking resolutions look suspiciously like tobacco. some wo have seen before. Patrons of moving picture shows ?o some lively moving on their own Hook when the illnis are accidentally fignltcd. A New York artist has been ad vertising for "a perfect man," and strange to say, some of these Coos Bay men who resent any criticism have not answered. Says tho philosopher of folly: "Everything anybody buys goes to 'ifio buyer, except coal, and that goes tia tho cellar." Little Florence Hantaan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Flanagan plays the very Important roll of little Mary Wllks. Jim Keano says she Is simply mar velous, a wonderful child. "The part Is quite long," said Keano In speaking, of the forth coming production yosterdny. "Why, I do not know a little child actress In all Now York City, who could begin to learn tho lines In tho short time Httlo Florence mastered them. Every gesture, Intonation of tho volco and tho carrlago of tho child bespeak tho natural born actress. She will mako a big hit." IT IS THOUGHT THAT WORK OX THIS LIXE WILL BE RESUMED DURIXG THE COMEVG ST-MMER. "I believe financial conditions here at home are better than, ther are in the East." said Mr. O'Brien. "This section is an agricultural country and business here is a barometer of the crop conditions, particularly the wheat crop. I got off Bad on the weather while I was away for I was telling everybody I talked with what a delightful Winter climate' we have. In Chicago somebody called my attention- to a newspaper tell' fng of heavy snows here, and yes terday I ran Into the storms myself." Mr. O'Brien said he knows nothing of the purchases of property In the terminal district and has no- knowl edge of purchases being made there by the Harriman interests.. In regard to the work on the Ore gon & Washington, the Union Pacific extension to Puget Sound, Mr. O'Brien said there has been no re cent progress on this end of the line, although work is going ahead in splendid shape farther north. He does not expect the long tunnel to be started through the Peninsula until the work Is still further ad vanced, for he says the tunnel can be driven In seven or eight months. Mr. O'Brien's office bas jurisdiction only over that portion of the Oregon & Washington project lying south of the Columbia River, and the tunnel and the bridge connections, which havo already been built, are all he has to construct.
