J-. THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSH FIELt), OREGON, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1908. . ll r Y , in I ffin - - r DULL FOR OIL M Eastern- Men Lease 1,500 Acres and Will Sink Holes Soon. SALEM, Ore., Oct. 21. Fifteen hundred acres of land wero leased at a meeting of Pratum farmers to C. W. Taylor and V. A. Leet, two east ern capitalists and oil men, recently located at Portland. These men promise to thoroughly investigate oil conditions in the Willametto Valley and are confident that in the next CO ' days they will make a monster oil strike. Messrs. Taylor and Leet promise that within a week or so they will build a 72-foot derlck and place a Standard California drill rig. This will ho tho largest that can bo built. Most of tho machinery is said to bo in Portland at the present time. They will start with a hole 14 Inches in diameter and drill to a depth of 1,000 or 1,500 feet. They hopo to complete tho work within 30 or 60 days. Their intention Is to drill in five different places to ade quately cover tho large tract of land and they are confident that oil .will bo struck. BAD STAMPS DON'T GO. Government Will Refuse to Recognize Mutilated Ones. A 'now order in the postofllce de partment went into effect recently. By Ita torms defaced stamps hero after are worthless. Should a cor ner be torn off, no matter how small or the stamp bo mutilated in any way it cannot longer be used. Ail letters bearing such stamps will he held at tlio postofllce two weeks for recqvery, and at tho end of that time, If not claimed, will be sent to tho dead letter office. Another phase of the order is also Interesting, Permission is now given Individuals to perforate the stamp with a- reasonably small Instrument for identification purposes. Such a step Is Intended to prevent the send ing of anonymous letters, or the theft or mutilation of private mail of any nature. SCRAJIBLE TO TICK APrLES. Fruit Foiling Ilnilly. nt Hood River, Due to Frost. HOOD RIVER, Ore., Oct. 20. Tho fact that hundreds of apples are dropping from tho trees here, some thing never before known at this Mmr. nt vesir. is creatine a wholesale scramble in tho valley to get them' picked. Every available man, wom an and child Is being pressed into seivlco to keep the fruit from falling to the ground and possibly being bruised. The cause of the great dropping of winter apples Is said to be due to the killing heavy frost which came re cently at the earliest date ever known at Hood River. Tho first car of winter apples ship ped out this year by tho union was sent east today. Its destination Is Now York. OREGON'S "WEB FOOTS" The name "Web-foot" for Ore gonians is not far amiss. It is pa tent to the most unobserving that rains are about as welcome to tho people of this section as they are to tho ducks, geese and frogs. No rains worth mentioning fell during Sep tember, and not until the middle week in October did the real article appear on the weather calendar. In consequence of tho delay, we have been a glum, crabbed and rather des pondent people ,but with the begin ning of the rains this week, these conditions gave place to cheerfulness, hopo and happiness, and everyone, from baby to grandparent, has taken pleasure in getting out and absorb ing a share of the generous moisture. Governor Haskell's utter unfit ness for any public position of trust or for association with any man anxious to niako an appeal on n moral Issuo to tho American peoplo has been nbuudantly shown. As nn American citizen who prizes his Americanism and cltl ecnBhlp far above any question of partisanship, I regard it as a Bcandal and dlsgraco that Gov eruor Haskell should bo connect ed with the mauugemont of a na tional campaign. To Ilrjan. In my Judgment tlie mensures you advocate would be wholly In effective In curing an evil, and so far as they had any effect at all would merely throw tho cntjro business of tho country into hope less and utter confusion. I put Mr. Taft's deeds ngalnst your words. I ask that Mr. Tnft bo Judged by all his deeds, for he wishes none of them forgotten. I aBk that you bo Judged both by tho words you wish remembered and by the words that seemingly you and your party now desire, to have forgotten. Each recurring attack of rheuma tism makes the disease harder to control, but tho fact that it is not In Itself dangerous causes people to neglect it, awaiting a change or a settled condition of the weather for relief. It Is often only after tho dis ease has become so serious as to In terfere with business that tho suf ferer will seek more than temporary relief. Chamberlain's Liniment is a remedy for rheumatism which any one can apply. It not only gives prompt relief from pain, but In a large majority of cases it brings about permanent results.
