Six couples have tired of their matrimo nial ties and called quits by having their attorneys file suits for divorce. Four of tho plaintiffs are women. The usual causes are set forth as to why each should be relieved of the partner chosen in a moment of ab Btractediiess. The cases are to be tried before Judge Hamilton at the term of court which convenes September 14, and are as follows: Myrtle Dulley vs. Charles Dulley. Emma G. Dillon vs. John Dillon. Clarence E. Owen vs. Mary Owen. Ira B. Bartle vs. Laura B. Bartle. Carrie ierbesman vs. John Sher besman. Vlnnie Van Valkenburg Boon vs. Daniel Boon Declares Haiti Times Are Due to Their Extravagance. BELLOWS PALLS, Vt., Sept. 2. "The women of America have helped to make hard times. All they live for; all they care for, is clothes tho latest shape In skirts. And they nro none too particular how they get what they want, or who pays for It." This is the declaration of Hetty Green, the richest woman in tho world, who began her annual vaca tion of a month. When dinner was announced on the train, she produced an applo and three crackers from her rotlculo and cheated tho dining-car. "I do not say the American women aro Immoral," she continued, "but they do not care what fearful prices their husbands, fathers and brothers may bo compelled to pay for their finery. Times aro hard in Now York and New York desorvcs hard times. All aro spendthrifts and money wast ers down there. "This will bo a hard winter nnd wo will not seo good times bofore spring. Last year when Itoseburg was ac tively endeavoring to get a railroad lino started between here and tho coast, many Coos Bay citizens were very indifferent, intimating that they did not need to do anything as Mr. Harriman was building a line to the bay. Now, they find that Mr. Harri man is not building that line, and furthermore, ho announces that he l? not going to build It until ho gets good and ready. Now the bay peo ple aro "getting busy," possibly at last giving heed to the Divine Injunc tion: "The Lord helps those who help themselves." Well, we hope thoy got a railroad no section of the country needs It worse. Roseburg Review. FREEDOM. HERB In tho forest now, Ah on tlint old July When first our fathers took the vow. The bluebird, stained with earth nnd Bky, Shouts from a blowlnu bough In green aerial freedom, wild and high, And now, as then, the bqbollnk Out on the uncertain brink Of tho Bwuylng maple swings, Loosing his song out link by golden link. While over the wood his proclamation rings, A daring boast that would unklngdom klngst Ewn so the wild birds sang on bough and wall Th'it dny the bell of Independence hall Thundered upon the world tho word of man, Tho word God uttered when the world begnn That day when liberty began to be And mighty hopes wero out on land and sen Hut Freedom calls her conscripts now ns then; It Is an endless battle to be free. As the old dangers lessen from the skies Now dangers rise. Down the long centuries eternally Again, again will rise Thermopylae: Again, again n new I.eonldas Must hold for God tho Imperiled pass. As tho long nges run New Lexington will rlso on 1-exlngton A.nd many a vnlorous Wurren fall Upon tho Imperiled wall, Man Is the conscript of an endless quest, A long divine adventure without rest, A holy wur, a battlo yet unwon When he shall climb beyond the burnt out sun. Each hard earned freedom withers to a bond; Freedom forever la beyond beyond! Edwin Markham. I LAND OilEGOl FOIL R No More limiting on Lower Klninntli Ilnrncy or Malheur Lakes. No longer may the Oregon hunter look for sport on Lower Klamath Harney or Malheur lakes, for gun ning on and around these famous shooting groundB has been forbidden by President Roosevelt and violators of his orders will be prosecuted in federal courts. The president has not undertaken to Interfere with the Oregon Btate game Jaws, but by executive order has created a national bird preserve embodying these three lakes, to gether with their shores, Islands and abutting swamps and In these pre serves no native birds may be killed nor eggs taken nor nests destroyed. In a few Instances lands abutting on these lakes may havo passed to private ownership, and there gunners are not affected by tho president's order, but such spots are scarce, and In the main it Is believed these or ders will put an end to the killing of birds on tho southern Oregon lakes. This preserve was created on rec ommendation of the National Audu bon Society, and Is Intended to pre vent the extermination of various types of wild birds which frequent the lakes region. The Aubudon soci ety, after careful Investigation found that Oregon birds were being killed ruthlessly, largely by hunters sup plying the millinery market. Cases were found where such hunters in season were making from $400 to $500 a day selling bird crests, plumes, breasts, wings, etc. With such profits in sight birds were being slaughtered by thousands. On Kla math lake and marsh no gunning will be permitted under any circumstance whatever. On the Malheur and Har ney preserve birds may be killed in limited numbers for purely scientific purposes by persons holding licenses from the secretary of agriculture, but only one or two birds of a type will be allowed to any person holding a permit, and as permits will be issued solely to scientists, gunning Is prac tically prohibited and absolutely so as regards sportsmen. Not only has the president put a stop to the killing of birds valuable chiefly for their plumage, but he has made it impossible to slaughter wild game. His order applies to wild ducks as well as to grebe. In fact, it applies to all feathered game ar.ound the lakes. Perserverance Is Fearless. But little is accomplished becauso but little is vigorously attempted, ad but little is attempted because diffi culties are magnified. A timorously cautious spirit, so far from acting with resolution, will never think itself in possession of the preliminaries for act ing at all. Perhaps perseverance lias been the radical principle of every truly great character. John Foster. COOS BAY. ROSEBURG & EAST ERN RAILROAD & NAVIGATION COMPANY. TIME TABLE NO. 3.
