Beam 40 feet Capacity 700,000 ft lumber Draught loaded 13 feet Speed per hour 11 knots The steam schooner Fifield swung out from the slip of Kruse & Banks shipyard, North Bend, at exactly 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, for her trial trip. It was made the oc casion for a notable public function and as the steamer moved out into the sun kissed waters of the Bay, it carried a large and merry party of Marshfleld and North Bend people who came in response' to an invita tion from the owner, Mr. A. F. Esta hrook of San Francisco, to luncheon aboard the boat and to dedicate the new vessel to the commerce of a greater Coos Bay. The Fifield is a new type of vessel built on strictly original lines and the owner and builders have great expectations for her. The only other boat of similar model is the Bandon, nlso owned by Mr. Estabrook, but the Bandon has no passenger accom modations, while the Fifield Is pro vided with the finest accommodations of any steamer on the coast for thirty passengers. Every state room Is provided with the finest equipment nnd furnishings that could be secur ed . including running hot and cold water, electric lights and all the modern conveniences. Tho vessel is one of the most staunchly built boats on the coast, and for her draught Is one of tho lar g' st lumber carriers on tho coast. d -.awing only thirteen feet when loaded to a capacity of 700,000 feet. She is provided with twin screws and two sets of boilers and engines so that if any accident happens to one the other may bo placed in imme diate commission. She is provided with a solid bulkhead fore nnd aft She has a speed of eleven knots per hour.. Except in one or two minor do tails tho trial trip wns thoroughly successful. After swinging into the channel, the vessel turned and steam ed down to Old North Bend amid salutes from tho whistles of tho factories and mills and cheers from tho people on tho shore. The Fifield goes into immediate commission between Coos Bay and San Francisco making tho round-trip every ten days and carrying both, freight and passengers, between those ports. Her outgoing cargo will bo lumber from tho C. A. Smith mill for which she has been engaged for some time taking lumber from tho mill to Bay Point, Cal. On her return trip slio will bring n general freight cargo and passangors from San Francisco. "Jack" Flanngan has been on gagod as the Marshfleld represen tative for Mr. Estabrook and will havo charge of tho passenger and freight traffic from this point, and Tom James will act In a llko capacity at North Bend. INVITATION TO LH. ffl Resolutions Adopted by Local Civic and Municipal Organ izations. The following is the text of the resolutions Inviting E. H. Harriman to Coos Bay, which are being adopt ed by the Marshfleld Chamber of Commerce, North Bend Chamber of a Commerce, Coos Bay Chamber of Commerce, North Bend city council and Marshfleld city council: Whereas, the conditions affecting the Coos Bay country and its large agricultural, timber and coal re sources, require the immediate im provement and extension of its trans portation facilities by rail and water, ind such improvement and exten sion aro necessary, not only for the success of its present largo business enterprises, btit for the development of Central and Southwestern Ore gon, by the opening of the natural 3oaport at this point as' an ocean outlet for the vast and rich region, and cularly to those of the Southern Pa cific Company. Now, it be Resolved, that President E. H. Harriman of said Southern Pacific Company be and hereby Is invited by the city council to visit Coos Bay during his sojourn in Oregon, that he may personally view and fully appreciate the opportunity which this bay affords for the building of a great commercial seaport and that the people of Coos Bay cities may correct impressions which he may have received through false reports, of their attitude towards the plans of the Southern Pacific Company, and Resolved, that Mayor L. J. Simp sot of North Bend, Mayor E. E. Straw of Marshfleld, and Mr. C. A. bmlth, act as a committee of the city of Marshfleld, and personally meet Mr. Harriman at Portland or San Francisco, or at such other con venient place as they may think best, and extend to him this Invita tion, urging him to accept the hos pitalities of the bay and good will of Its people, and Resolved, that the committee be asked to wait on Vice-President C. J. MiUIs, vice-president and general manager qt tho Coos Bay, Roseburg, Eastorn Railroad and Navigation Company, and request him to accom pany them to meet President Harri man and unite with them in urging the transportation needs of Coos Bay. North Bend officials have decided to add W. P. Evans, president of the North Bend Chamber of Commerce, to tho committee from Coos Bay to call on E. H. Harriman and invite him to visit Coos Bay and to dis cuss the Drain-Coos Bay railroad matter. Mr. Evans was formerly prominently connected with the Southern Pacific before he came to Coos Bay and entered business for himself. It was also understood that Mr. Evans planned to call on Mr. Harriman this' summer, anyway.
