An over sight by a Times" printer caused a regrettable error in" the advertise ment of The Myers Store of North Bond, in last evening's Times. Tho copy as prepared advertised "Wom en's canvas Oxfords worth up to ?1.50 for 76 cents.'" The printer made it read "were $4.50 and $5.00." The Myers Store prices are so well known that the error was very pal pable and it may be stated with equal emphasis that there is always avoidance of exacceratlon in th Myers Store advertisements. When this store advertises certain values the public has learned that these values are substantial regardless of price, it Is one Of ihe features that make their store advertising ef fective. Stating facts only and re garding every public statement as a sacred pledge has won tho people's conndpnee to an eminent degree, for that reason The Times makes this voluntary announcement nnd 'as sumes the responsibility for a state ment which should" not be charged to"fhe advertiser. Stir ling in the April number of an English review. There Is one of tho old lady who, returning from'the zoo, announced tb'at "she" always did crijoy i visit to 'the theological gardens." Another is nbput a servant who, de scribing her master's last Illness, ex plained tliat "the'doctord heid a conso lation and found that It was something eternal""' ' ' l "" Mr. Stirling also quotes tho lady who remarked that' when in Italy she had seen "so many people In the garbage of monks, with tonsils on their heads." Tkero Is tho story of the wife who, wishing to complain that her husband was a' martinet In his own home, pro claimed him ns "a marmoset In his own family." ' Rntbur a chestnut, but none the lesa amusing, is tho old person in Punch who wanted to know whether "soda water should bo written S3 two sepa rate words, or if there sho'uld bo a si phon in between." ' "" She also gives some funny examples of schoolboys' blunders. "Excommuni cation," said one promising youth, "meant that no one was to speak to some ouo" fine in its guarded vague ness. "Tho lungs," explained another bright pupil, "aro tho organs of execra tion," while n third, questioned on Euclid, explained that "tho baso of a trianglo is the side wo don't talk about."
