OREGON CITY, April 28. (Special) Rev. John M. Linden, pastor of the First Daptist church, has Instituted a vigorous cru sade against the members of his church picking hops, stating that It is encouraging the liquor interests. In a sermon Sunday night, before a crowded church, he said. "It requires a quickened con science to crystallize action against hop-picking, which is part of the process of beer-making." Several cases of scarlet fever are reported to have broken out at Sumner tho last few days. Dr. Dix of Marshfield, was called there yesterday. Stringent steps are being taken to prevent a spread of tho disease there. School Resumes Today. Tho pub lic schools In Marshfield and North Bend, which had been closed for a few days on account of illness among the pupils, resumed this morning. No further trouble from disease Is anti cipated. Most of tho pupils were ready to return. Big Engines Arrives. A largo donkey engine or hoisting engine for John McDonald, for hauling up and letting down cars on Blue Ridge at Daniels Creek, arrived today. Tho engine has been expected for several weeks and tho delay has held up Mr. McDonald's work which will bo push ed from now on. Buy Flve-Acro Tract. Downing Brothers, who recently camo to Coos Bay from Washington, havo pur chased a flve-acro tract on Isthmus Inlet about two miles from Marsh fiold and adjoining tho Steckels Place from R. O. Stutsman. The tract has deep water frontage nnd will bo cleared at onco for fruit growing and truck gardening for which it is admirably located. .Mrs. Straw Bettor. Mrs. E. E. Straw, wife of Mayor Straw, yester day underwent an operation at their homo for nppondlcitls from which she had been bothorod considerably latoly. She was In excellent condition for tho operation and it is said to havo been ono of tho most successful ! Personal Notes F. S. DOW is expected home from San Francisco next week. MASTER TOM MINOT returned to day from a short visit at Coqulllo. W. U. DOUGLAS, Dr. E. Mingus and a number of others, went to Co qullle this morning on business. C. H. JENKINS and Wm. Conrad spent Sunday at Sumner, doing a little hunting while there. ED. KAJIERRER is in Portland on a business trip. He will visit San Francisco before returning to Marshfield the last of tho week. CHARLES PARKER of the C. A. Smith Lumber and Manufacturing Company, left yesterday on tho M. F. Plant en route to his home In Minneapolis where ho will remain several months. MRS. ED. KAMERRER and two children left yesterday for San Francisco from which place she will go to Colusa, California, for an extended visit at the home af Mr. Kamerrer's parents. C. A. SHARKEY of Charles City, la., and A. A. Thacker of Ohio, arrived on Coos Bay to investigate this section. Mr. Thacker has been In tho oil business and will investigate tho possibilities of oil In this section. THE REV. II. II. BROWN left yes terday on tho M, F. Plant for San Francisco whero ho will Join Mrs. Brown, who preceded him there a few weeks, and the two will short ly leave on their extended eastern trip. SEC. WALTER LYON of the Cham ber of Commerce started on an overland trip to Roseburg Satur day night to confer with tho Ore gon State Fair Board, concerning tho printing of tho premium lists for tho Second Southern Oregon District Fair hero in August. Ho expected to walk all tho way from Sumner. Ho will return the latter part of tho week. that has ever been performed here. Sho Is reported getting along nice ly and her complete recovery soon Is hoped for by tho numerous friends of tho fnmily. Answers Critics. Tho Rev. Father Donnelly of tho Catholic church In his sermons at North Bend and Marshfield yesterday answered, In no uncertain terms, tho criticism that certain parties unfriendly to Mercy hospital have mnde. He showed how untruo theso rumors aro and ex plained how part of tho money used to build tho Institution had been raised. L. J. Simpson alono con tributed about $5,000 and Father Donnelly personally gave $3,000 to It. Many Enjoy Excursion. Over 160 North Bend and Marshfield people yesterday took advantage of the ex cursion which Conductor Kardell and others rnn to Bandon yesterday. Tho train left hero at 8 o'clock, reached Bandon at 11, and, return ing, loft Bandon at D, and reached Marshfield at 8:15 p. m. Asldo from tho rain at Bandon about 2:30 In tho aftornoon, nothing occurred to mar the day. Good accommodations were afforded on tho train and boat. Tho Acmo Band which accompanied tho party contributed to tho pleasure of tho day by numerous selections. All report a very enjoyable time. SETTLEMENT NOTICE.
