STREETS AND SEWERAGE IMPORTANT PROBLEMS Will Hold a Joint Conference With Property Owners and Taxpayers. The Marshfield city council will hold a special meeting Thursday evening to consider ways and means foi paving the business streets of the ciiy. it i3 contemplated that this meeting will be a joint conference with property owners on Front street and other streets In the business cen ter which are so greatly in need of Improvement. This and a decision to push the work on the sewerage sjstem In South and West Marshfield were the two most Important actions ot the council at the regular meeting In the city hall last evening. All the members of the council ex cept H. Lockhart who is out of the city were present when Mayor Straw called the body to order. , An ordinance giving notice of in tention to establish grades on G. I. Fifth and Fern streets was passed; also on Oregon avenue, H. street, Miriam street, Ohio and Nevada Avenues. A largely signed remonstrance against the proposed improvements on Miriam tsreet was presented and on this showing the council decided to abandon these improvements for the present. Bills Allowed. The consideration of bills was then taken up the largest ones ordered iald being ?1G3.G5 cents to the Pio neer Hardware Co., $1G0 to Masters & McLain for extra street work on Pennsylvania avenue and $30.00 to the same firm for extra street work on Broadway. In the consideration of the Pioneer Hardware Co's bill Mayor Straw en livened the monotony of the routine proceedings with the only joke of the fcebsion by remarking that the bills for a siren fire whistle were almost an high as the sound of the whistle, the- bill for installing the whistle af ter receiving It being over $70.00. Health OHlcer Dr. Mlngus was pre sent and delivered an earnest talk to tho council on the necessity of hurry ing tho work of sewer construction In South and Webt Marshfield. Ho said this was of great Importances as a number of cases of infectious dis eabea had developed in those sections ap a direct result of poor boworage. City Engineer Sandberg was called upon and said ho would have all his sower plans and designs lor South Marshfield ready for presentation to and consideration of the council at lit. next' regular meeting on Monday evening. Hotter Streets Needed. Alderman Sacchl then took tho lloor and said that without minimiz ing the Importance of tho sower work tho Importance of tho improvement of tho business streets must not bo overlooked. Ho stated It as his be lief that tho condition of Front street had driven people away who camo to Coos Bay with tho intention of locat ing and were disgiiBtcd and discour aged with tho nppearanco of 'the main business street of tho city. HAS LEG BROKEN AT THE SMITH MILL An Employe Ts Hit With Slab and Sustains Seiious and Painful Injury. William Zapisek, an cmployo of the C. A. Smith mill, is lying at the Mercy hospital at North Bond with a broken thigh bone, as the result of an accident in which he sustained the Injury. While handling one of the logs at the mill he was in some man ner struck with a slab, which frac tured tho right thigh bone. Dr. Geo. E. Dix was summoned and set the injured member.
