SALEM, Dec. C. No arrest has yet been made in the ciue of Mrs. Casteel, her son and her daughter and their farm foreman, Mr. Montgomery whoso charred bodies were found In the ashes of tho farm house nt Macleay, Oregon. Tho theory first advanced that tho four persons were murdered by tramps In resisting rob bery has been displaced by nnother to tho effect that Montgomery, who was to marry Mrs. Casteol, killed tho three, then committed suicide, tho burning of the house resulting either from some mishap during tho trag edy or from some deliberate act o Montgomery just beforo ending his own life. There is no tangible clew upon which tho police can work. Mrs. Cnstcel's daughter, Martha, mas, nt which tlmo tho wedding of. mas, at whlc htlmo tho wedding o tho widow and Montgomery was also to have occurred. Mrs. Casteel's son was weak both physically and ment ally. A bloodstained hatchet and a aded shotgun wero found near tho ulna of the house. Tho fearful tragedy has something of local color in It. Mrs. Castcel'a husband, Jasper Casteel, wa3 em ployed with the Southern Oregon company at Sumner, during tho building of tho railroad from tho head of tidewater to Sumner. This was twenty years ago, and Casteel is well remembered by some of tho old residents of Sumner. His reputation was not of tho best when ho was at Sumner, and ho was considered a tough character. Nothing was known of Mrs. Casteel, as sho was residing at Myrtlp Creek, Douglas county while he was working at Sum ner. Casteel was killed in a drunk en brawl by a partner who was min ing with him near Myrtle Creek. D. C. PItzer, a real estato dealer, who gives no credit to tho theory that tho family was murdered by Montgom ery, the hired man. Tho Uoseburg Heviow, in commenting on tho trag edy says: "Mr. PItzer passed through hero this afternoon on tho "Flyor" enrouto to Macleay to Investigate tho affair. Ho discredits absolutely the theory that Montgomery was in any way responsible "for tho tragedy. Mr. Pitzer stated that when Mrs. Casteel left Myrtlo Creek for Macleay sho took along about ?1000 in money, and ho Is of tho firm belief that cer tain persons knowing of this fact and bent on robbery murdered Mrs. Casteel and of necessity in order to conceal their idontlty also killed her son and daughter and Mr. Montgomery."
